Example of how our country REALLY honors our Veterans

Another Veterans Day has come and gone. Saw a lot of flag waiving, parades etc praising our veterans and their sacrifices. The President even made a speech after laying a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in which he talked about how much we need to take care of our Veterans that have sacrificed so much for this country. What he and the other political hacks that were waiving flags did not tell you was that come next year, plans that were drafted during the Bush administration will come into effect that will effectively raise the out of pocket expenses for health care to over 171,000 military retirees and their families as much as 3000.00 per year. This plan will also raise the health care costs of our military reserve personnel. DOD admits that implemetation of this plan which was slated originally to be implemented this year, was put off until next year so that it would not become a political football during this year's elections.

Me and my family are one of those that will be seeing our health care costs raised under this plan. Basically, what it does is reduce my military retirment income by how ever much we need medical assistance to as much as 3000.00 per year.

Yeah, we veterans are being taken care of all right..........I want to personally thank all you political hacks for your support to me and my family as well as all the other retirees you are going to put the screws to. Is it no wonder that such a large percentage of homeless people are veterans....you have done such a good job for all of us.

While I am on this soapbox, let me also thank all those of my age that did not serve that continuously thank me for my service....where in the hell were you 40 years ago when it would have meant something.

Totally agree I been saying this for years. Of course some of my thoughts have been....we give money to other countries, illegals and inner city causes but the people who protect our country get shafted. I have worked in some VA hospitals and have seen the old buildings and poor upkeep in a few of them. Hospital closings and red tape can make it tough on retired vets. The way this country works now is that political topics get the attention. If the topic doesn't help a political official it gets pushed to the side so they can toot their own horn on a cause that helps them.
Piss poor leadership by most if not all politicians are ruining this country. Special interest groups with money and clout get their way.
Personally, I honor the retired veterans and respect the folks who served. Without them we would be speaking German.

    THANK YOU for your service........

In my opinion....the only health care and benefits we should provide to ANY federal entity is our MILITARY. It is unfortunate that we continually vote for silly garbage for those who refuse to step up, yet we continue to screw those who carried a rifle.......I don't get it. I hope this changes, but in reality, I doubt it ever will.....

Again, my friend......THANK YOU for your service.

    Later,

    Geo

Ah yes, I remember the days coming back home from Vietnam when we were looked at as some kind of vermin, why all of a sudden are we seen in a different light today, we are still the same people and some of the people who are thanking us now were treating us like something to be spit on then and now it seems our government is seeing us as somebody to be spit on.

I may be your age, I don't know. I did not serve in the military but I do thank all those who have and will in order to protect MY freedoms. Do my thanks mean any less because I did not serve?

    whats new?

nd theMy step dad was career military, he went in years before WW11, he was looked at like a leech, because there were food lines because of the depression. After the war, when he retired and got a job, him and other vets who worked were critized for working and getting government pensions, how soon they forgot what the soldiers did to deserve that pension. We lived on an army air force base for almost a year, and I really liked going to the mess hall with him on a sunday morning, and truly liked SOS.I never took any of my GI benefits, didn't need them, still dont. But I'm also on a fixed income,I get a pension, that hasn't and wont ever go up, and always fear that envelope from my former employer telling me they are dis-continuing the pension.I pay for my supplemental insurance also. and it keeps going up also.Theres a hell of a lot us in that boat. I enjoyed some of my years in the service, and was fortunate that there was peace, I enlisted, went over seas for 29 months, and am proud of my service, and respect ALL service men, past and present.I support the charities that look after vets, DAV, VFW, PAV of america, and the USO, every month with out fail I recieve those letters asking for cash, and have answered all of them, not with thousands, but with money I could use for some for some other nonsence. Got enough adress labels, greeting cards to last two life times. Went to funeral of one of my hunting buddys, who came home from nam, because he needed to drop out of school. the draft got him.Our grandson had two afgan tours and part of of one iraq, now hes in japan.

Just because you did not serve does not mean your Thanks are not appreciated. Actually, a Thanks from people that did not serve is certainly appreciated....unless you were an adult (or at least old enough to understand the sacrifices men and women and their families make by serving in the military) during the Viet Nam era and you did not start Thanking them until it became politically correct to do so, which came about during the Gulf War. Personally, other than family, I do not recall one person having ever thanked me for my service until it became politically correct to do so. I do however, like Hlleonard remember having many folks treat me less than nice, call me a baby killer etc......during those days. If you were one of those folks...then what I said about your Thanks being too late applies to you. If you were not one of those folks...then Carry On.

    different opinion

I served, against my better judgement! I counted the days to get back "in-country" and swore I would never nor any of my sons ever leave this country to shoot at some one again. 44 years later still feel the same way maybe even stronger Just my 2cents

Did not mean to sound ungrateful, I understand what you mean now. I do not fall into that group of people. I was 18 when my brother left Viet Nam in 1972.

    God Bless

Your welcome... If most of your countrymen were like you then we might not have a country, I'm thankful that most are not.
