Ok guys, I need some help. How low does the river need to be before y'all don't take ur boat up to the fossil bed. I know the channel, but how low is too low???? Thanks again!! I know the sauger are running. It's been on fire the past few weeks. But I want to take the boat to get away from the people.

I'd like to give you a definite depth, but I don't know either. At 12.0 ft. on the lower it would be a real pucker factor for sure.

Thanks I was thinking 11.5-12ft was the lowest I would try. It's 12.45ft. Going to try some sauger fishing in the morning. Will report after trip!!

Fished with Fishinfreak this morning in the Fossil bed. Had 20 nice ones fast. Fishing jigs, spoons on bottom, white was the color!! Fishing about 20-25ft in the current. Water temp was 49.5. Btw I'm in a 18ft crestliner deep-v with a 115yamaha and a 8hp Honda kicker. If anyone wants to stop us and say hi.

So, have you answered your own question? Hit any rocks on your way up the river channel?
PS Glad to hear they are still there and that you caught another limit. Congrats.

Just wondering do you go up the duck pond wall, or do you do the "S" and start from the gravel point on the Ind.side up to the submerged truck over to the first break in the wall ie. duck pond entrance?? If you go straight up the wall you have to watch out for the big rock right before the first break and entrance to the pond. Then watch for shallow water at the second break in the wall.If you do the "S" watch for shallow water right by the rock point, the submerged truck will be under water till about 10ft at the lower gauge so go up the right side of the rock point till you are straight across from the duck pond entrance and cut straight across. Then watch for shallow water at the second break as stated before. One thing I have noticed this year is after you reach the third break in the wall and you cut over to colgate creek watch for shallow water at the end of wave rock, it seems to have left a small sand bar kind of tailing off wave rock. As Tyme has said once you get below 12ft at the lower gauge it gets a little hairy. The key is to GO SLOW and watch your depth finder, aluminum prop is best and when in dought troll.Hope this helps Chuck

Thank you Riverrat for the great detailed way of getting up to the fossil bed!!!! We had fun today and yes we do the "S" route!! But today the river was 11.25ft and it was fun getting in and out lol. But once again guys the sauger are running! P.S. everyone please be safe around the river. Current is fast and the water temp is only 49.5.

No problem man, the S is the best. When the water get's down and you can see that rock on the wall side right before the entrance it's got more dings in it than my wifes car door. And thats a mess LOL. Chuck

The aluminum are allot more forgiving. With all the rock down there it's just a matter of time before you find a rock that wasn't there the other day lol. When you hit SS, it's going to shear a pin or worse. I'd rather refurbish an aluminum, than pay for the damage a SS is going to leave behind. I've got a SS on my boat now and scares the bajeezus out of me when I get in skinny water. Chuck

That makes sense we have mud bottoms and wood in the Wabash and the SS will chew up the wood.
