Have you considered giving kayak fishing a try? Want to learn?

Canoe Kentucky has put together a Kayak Fishing Team for the upcoming year. Our mission statement is to help grow the sport of kayak fishing even beyond the huge growth that's taken place just the past few years. Kentucky has some of the best fishing in the nation, and we hope to help people get on the water and fish in a way they've maybe never had the pleasure of experiencing!

We know there is a forum dedicated to Canoe/Kayak fishing on fishin.com, but this is really meant more for someone who has not had a chance to experience Kayak Fishing before, or has maybe only given it a passing thought.

This is not a business plug, as the seminars are completely free. Even the 2 seminars we plan on having in an indoor pool! We are simply looking to provide education and information for those who might be interested in seeing what it's all about!

The majority of users on here are powerboat anglers, and we are by no means asking you to give up what you're used to and join us on the "dark side" Kayak fishing can be a great way to supplement the fishing you already do! Maybe you dont have enough time to prep the boat, or maybe you're not wanting to drop money on gas that week, or maybe you want to fish an area you cant normally access! Kayaking can be the answer to all of those even if powerboating is still your main form of lake transportation. Many dont realize how far Kayak Fishing has come as a sport over the past couple years, and arent aware of the fishing-specific kayaks available in terms of stability and features.

Below is a link to our Facebook Page. "LIKE" our Facebook Page to be entered in for the chance to win one of three FREE guided trips down the Elkhorn (a $150, kayak rental included) value . On this page, we will be posting information about upcoming seminars, gear reviews, news, fishing pictures and videos, and even tournament information (YES, we're having tournaments starting in March/April and going through October! More information will be provided as tourny time edges closer)

The first of FOUR FREE seminars (the second and fourth seminar will be in pools so you can experience the different kinds and styles of kayaks, PFDs, paddles, etc) is being held this coming Saturday, December 1st, at the Paul Sawyer Public Library from 1pm-3pm. (Dont worry, we'll have a radio or pull up ESPN.com to provide us with game updates ) It's titled "Kayak Fishing 101" so we will be covering the basics of kayaking mostly. We realize that most the come are already experienced anglers, so this one will be geared more towards equipment, safety, types and styles of kayaks, etc. We will have two fishing kayaks there as well as other equipment so you can get hands-on time!

Again, these seminars are free, so please drop buy to at least mingle with other anglers, and who knows, you might realize that kayak fishing is something you'd at least like to give a try!

Do you have some kind of hoist to get me out of the darned thing? I suspect my knee and back would prevent me doing it without that help.

But, if I were younger I would be there.

    Colby,

Thanks for your response! When many people hear "Kayak" they think of what's called a "Sit-inside" kayak, which is the kind you see used for on whitewater. Those kayaks you actually put your lower torso completely into the kayak. They can be very difficult for someone to get in and out of if they have back and/or knee problems.

However, I think you could be very surprised at what is available in the kayak fishing realm! We have many people that participate in our tournament series that back trouble or knee trouble. With kayaks that are designed for fishing, you're often sitting ON the kayak, and not in. Not only that, but you're usually sitting up in a chair! It makes for a very comfortable, natural ride, and makes getting in and out of the kayak very easy.

Here is a great example. This is one of the more popular kayaks that are built specifically FOR fishing. It's known as a Jackson Coosa, and we will have one at the free seminar on December 1st.

As you can see, there is a chair that sits upright and elevated, to give you a very comfortable, natural position to sit in, and allows for entry onto, and exit off the kayak very easily.

We still would love to see you at the seminar! Since we will have a couple kayaks at the library, you can have the chance to sit on a Jackson Coosa, as well as a different model from a different maker, to see if it seems more feasible for you. If nothing more, you can talk fishing with some other people that are very passionate about a sport we all love!
