With all this rain, the river is rising and the gates have been opened.![]()

I am told that Louisville is the closest best chance I have of catching sauger.
Anyone going tomorrow that has an open seat? Been lots of sauger talk on the board here lately.
I live near barren river lake and based on conversations with the fisheries guy, my chances aren't good yet of catching them below barren tail waters.
If no open boat seats can someone give me some advice on where to bank fish to try to catch some.
thanks,
Jason

Weeeelllllll... Your fisheries contact is partially correct. NEVER in the past would your chances have been good below the dam at barren. That being said, there is a fellow that stands on the end of the wall that has regularly been catching limits of sauger on worms and crappie jigs hung straight down in the wash. I know, funny right? He has been catching a few walleye too but no bigguns yet. I am one of those guys that spends a couple days a week down there flippin crappie jigs. Saw some really nice walleye caught out of there this last winter. I live in alvaton. Ill send you a pm.
Would be interested to hear move info about sauger below dam. Are they still bitting?
Here in Louisville, water is too high and fast!
Jason,
I grew up in Henderson, Ky. which is on the Ohio River. The sauger fishing there can be on fire at times however, it takes clearer water to do really well. If you intend to fish from bank, the Newburg Lock and Dam is your best bet on the Kentucky side of the dam. I never fished from a boat there but, if it is bright skies the boaters tend to do better with access to deeper water. The boaters tend to fish along the lock wall. I always fished the eddy created by the dam and a long retaining wall. The only draw backs I see are the as follows:
1) Water clarity
2) Water depth-low is best
3) Trip length-@90 miles to ky side from Bowling Green
4) Boat access-have to launch from Newburg IN
5) Combat fishing-no secrets in fishing-the colder the better
6) Water varation-Mighty Ohio can change fast
