KY Lake - Flats in back of bays

When fishing the early top water bite on the flats in the back of bays how do you position your boat?

If the flat is ~5ft of water, do you stay in 10-12ft water preceeding the flat and fan cast around the flat (well off the shoreline)

Or do you position your boat on the flat and cast to the shoreline?

Depth is a relative term....each flat may be differing in depths.....target the ditches coming out from the main tributary and secondary runs ins.
