Millwood Lake Fishing and Conditions Report

The Overall Picture:


As of Tuesday, Millwood Lake level is up and rising again from the recent thunderstorms. The lake elevation on Wednesday was 17" above normal NCP (Normal Conservation Pool) at 260.6 and rising; oxbows' water clarity stained, Little River clarity muddy with current discharge this week. Millwood Lake tailwater elevation 245 ft-msl with gate discharge at the dam around 12,500 CFS in Little River according to the USACE. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful link page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels. NAVIGATION CONDITIONS ARE HAZARDOUS on Millwood Lake with high discharge rates and heavy flow conditions in Little River. Debris fields are present. Use EXTREME CAUTION during current high gate discharge conditions.


Surface temps remain stable this week, ranging in 65-70ºF range, depending on location. Continue to use caution in navigation on Little River and Millwood watching for random broken, or floating timber in Little River are in effect. Lots of Little River buoy markers have been replaced along the main lake channel. Use extreme caution in navigation on main lake. High Current Discharge Volume!


Current along Little River increased this week with discharge release at the dam, and river clarity ranging 0 inches visibility depending on location. Clarity & visibility of Oxbows at 8-10 inches depending on location. Further up Little River near White Cliffs and Wilton Landing has heavier stain/muddy inflow conditions. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, gate discharge, rain, or thunderstorms. Muddy current was everywhere we went on the Lake this week, from Okay Landing and Cottonshed and White Cliffs on Little River.

USACE is in process of discharging high river volume at the Millwood Dam from thunderstorms and a 3' pool rise. Be aware of sudden gate changes fishing the rocks below Millwood Dam and spillway.


Continue to use extreme caution in Little River where river current may have moved or damaged river buoys!


Be aware of missing/broken telephone pole lane markers at upper end of Little Gas Line Cutoff boat lane!

The Details:


Largemouth Bass: We did manage to sneak out a couple days this week between thunderstorms and flash flood warnings. Bass were fair on Black/blue or Chartreuse Shad buzzbaits and chatterbaits. Black grape or solid black, 10" power worms caught a few Bass over the last week around 2-3 pounds each. We caught a few Bass on a blackberry Brush Hog and a chartreuse pumpkin magnum lizard. Water temperature is good for activity levels, but there is so much fresh water in Millwood over the past 2 weeks, the Largemouths are roaming up through trees and brush into areas we couldn't reach or get close enough to. We could see and hear Largemouth Bass busting on baitfish or Bream (Bream of which are prespawn and getting ready to make beds) but a lot of those were just out of reach, and super shallow behind bushes, cypress trees, and thick vegetation. With the present conditions as they are, from recent flash flooding, the rising lake level continues pushing the Largemouth back into trees and brush out and in back of several creek channels we went into. We snatched a few Largemouth Bass on a Gitzit 4" Magnum Tube with an internal rattle in the head, as well and had several hits on a black neon and a pumpkinseed/chartreuse tail. We were pitching and flipping the tubes and Brush Hogs as far back into the brush as we could reach. We missed a lot of fish in those conditions, some of which, we think were prespawn Bream and Goggle-Eye (Warmouth) hitting our Gitzit Tubes and not getting the hook in their mouth.
White Bass: No report.


Crappie: No report.


Cats: improved last week and again this week with the increased current along Little River. Limb lines, trot lines, and yo-yos have been working for some nice Blues and Cats over the past couple weeks with the increase of discharge at Millwood Dam. Cut shad, buffalo, and soap have been working.

Lake level 17" above normal conservation pool elevation, currently 260.6 ft-msl and rising. Clarity of oxbows along Little River heavy stained from recent high wind and thunderstorms. The discharge currently near 12,500 CFS in Little River, according to the USACE. The tailwater below the dam and gates, is around 245 ft-msl, with discharge. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful link page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels, especially during high river flow and discharge conditions at any time on Millwood. NAVIGATION IS TERMED HAZARDOUS.


Current along Little River increased, clarity ranging 0 inches visibility and muddy depending on location. Clarity & visibility of Oxbows along Little River at 5-8 inches depending on location. Further up Little River, near White Cliffs and Wilton Landing has heavier stain & muddy conditions. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, gate discharge, rain, or thunderstorms.


Surface temps as of Monday, consistent, ranging 65º early to 70º later in the day, depending on location.

Navigation on Millwood Lake is HAZARDOUS with discharge at the dam & current flow conditions. Debris fields are present in Little River with high flow conditions.


IMPORTANT: USE CAUTION IN THE UPPER END OF THE BOAT LANE FROM THE HIGH LINE TO THE LITTLE GAS LINE CUTOFF FOR MISSING OR DAMAGED TELEPHONE POLE BOAT LANE MARKERS that were damaged or moved by broken timber on north end of main lake in open water!


Wear your life jacket and kill switch and watch for obstructions, floaters, broken limbs, logs, and debris along Little River.

Wear your Life Jacket and kill switch!! If you are suddenly or unexpectedly thrown from your boat, it could be your only chance of survival. Use caution navigating Little River in low light conditions, SLOW DOWN, and pass friendly to other boaters! As always, careful watch for any random floaters and debris in Little River's current, and wearing your PFD and kill switch is a requirement!
