For those of you that would like to do a like striped bass aka rock fish fishing or should I can catching now is the time! First always check out state regulations before heading out! Second don’t forget your live shrimp, and third or your Harper Super Strike float rig! (This float allows you to quickly adjust your depth while still being able to pop the cork making the wonderful “shrimp is fleeing sound!”) According to this fishing report the striped bass can be found schooling around rocks or wood structure. It is suggested situating your bait so that it is about 6 to 12 inches off the structure. (near the bottom)

Captain Frank Cullum of Miss Judy Charters is happy to report that trolling for spotted sea trout in the Savannah River has been very interesting. While using small jig heads rigged with assorted shrimp patterns/colors and paddle tails Captain Frank has been catching some really nice spotted sea trout. The secret in some cases has been more about the size of the engine used to troll with. Most fishermen will agree that less than 15 horsepower works like a charm. So if you happen to have a smaller boat that is powered by a small outboard you just might have some great luck dragging the light tackle artificial set ups and catching spotted sea trout. The secret is to always troll with the current! Just don’t be afraid, just drag them and snag them! and for those that prefer using third trolling motor, well that will work too!

Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charter would like to wish you a wonderful fish catching holiday season! For those fishers looking for a solid spotted sea trout bite, Captain Matt suggests live shrimp under adjustable traditional floats. After you get the bite a going in some cases it is easy to switch to artificial shrimp patterns. Some shrimp patterns work better than others. We prefer those that are impregnated with some sort of alluring smell! Berkley Alive, works like a charm! And yep the secret definitely is in the sauce and location!

Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters has been catching so really nice slot red fish and mega spotted sea trout! According to Captain Garrett fish catching report due to colder water temps the fish have not been staying at one particular depth. So he suggest, once arriving at your fishing spot, that you fish different depths before moving. In other words, work the spot like you are planning on staying while!

Captain Justin Rahn of Miss Judy Charters had been doing quite well with the slot red fish and spotted sea trout! Captain Justin prefers to use live shrimp as bait, but will change up to mud minnows if necessary. Most of his fish are being caught in the creeks and rivers! And of course Captain Justin wishes everyone a wonderful Holiday Season!










Offshore Artificial Reefs

We are catching some very nice black sea bass, trigger fish, ocean perch, and a few vermilion snapper while plain old bottom fishing at the artificial reefs! Your boat or mine!

It’s Offshore Cold Water Sheepshead Biting Time!
Water temps have dropped, it is December, and the sheepsheads have moved offshore! For those that want to make plans, your boat or mine, to please do so before March 15, 2021. So you got time to decide! What the best bait? Of course anything wrapped in a shell! However, purple back fiddlers seem to be the preferred. And why? It seems that the purple back fiddlers are sweeter tasting than the black backs! How do I know? Well, I put a purple back in one hand and a black back in the other, squeezed them, and tasted the juice. Now, without asking, you already know that the purple back was the sweetest! Why? That is what we prefer to use as our main bait when targeting sheepshead!







It is offshore trophy red fish time!
Captain Deidra Helmey Jeffcoat is holding up a nice trophy red fish, which David Miller caught while using small mullet steak as bait. Christopher Miller is also holding up a nice trophy red fish that was caught while using whiting steak as bait. (From Blue Ash, Ohio) These fish were caught in late November in Wassaw sound. They have now migrated to the offshore waters and can be found schooling in rips and over structure at the artificial reefs. We caught a few of these fish last week while plain old bottom fishing with cut squid at the J Buoy!

Merry Christmas!

Here I am early Christmas morning with doll in hand, eyes closed half asleep, and just happy as can be that daddy didn’t catch Santa Clause! That flash that you see in the background was made by a Brownie Kodak Camera!


“Christmas in the Fifties with Dear old Captain Dad!”


As a child, like most, I loved Christmas. I knew that Santa Clause was the real thing and that hopefully he was going to visit my house. Every year my father would tell all of us children that he was going to set a trap so as to catch old Saint Nick. In this department I wasn’t too popular with the neighborhood kids. This was due to the fact that Daddy was a great hunter and could possibly set a trap that just might work. So as you can see we were all in a dilemma at Christmas time.


We would talk about it among ourselves and came up with some pretty convincing reasons why we shouldn’t worry too much about Daddy’s old trap. The number one reason was that we knew for a fact that Santa was very smart. So therefore he would see right through any trap. The other and best reason was that we knew for a fact was that if Santa could get into houses without chimneys he could easily escape. After a few minutes us six year olds would get tired of worrying about this and basically forgot about it. At least until Daddy brought it up again, which was quite often on Christmas Eve!


As an only child I was very fortunate to get lots things during the year. So therefore when Christmas arrived I needed more after all a child needs lots of things to survive. Back in the old days we received only a few catalogs. Not like today where your mailbox is packed full everyday for months before the big event. I would always be anxiously waiting for the “Levy’s” catalog to arrive. This was my Christmas list in picture form. My father would tell me that I could circle what I wanted and he would pass it on to Santa. Now this is the funny thing. He always told me not to spend any more than $25.00 on all of my gifts. So the process of picking the presents and then adding their costs up began with hopes that what I had picked didn’t go over the designated amount.


Until I got older I didn’t understand what money and Santa Clause had in common. After doing all of this work and making my final decision I would hand over my picture Christmas list to Daddy. He would hopefully as he promised, pass it on to Santa Clause. However, I never forgot for one moment that he might catch the rascal before he got to our house. I wasn’t the only child worried about this.


Most people leave cookies and milk. However, my father and I decided to make a few changes. Over the years we left sardines and saltines, Vienna sausage and Ritz’s, and one time we left sea rations of can cookies and jelly. As far as something to drink we left what we had on hand at the time, which could have been anything from water straight out the faucet to something that came in a bottle. It seemed that no matter what we left Santa he always seemed to eat it all.


When Christmas morning finally arrived I jumped out of bed, ran into the living room, and got a big letdown. There wasn’t any presents or toys to be found. I couldn’t believe it Daddy had actually caught Santa Clause. I ran to daddy’s bedroom almost in tears and woke him up. He rose up half asleep and asked, “What’s wrong?” I replied, “Santa didn’t come!” He quickly replied, “Oh Santa and I got to talking about fishing, eating snacks, and he left all of your presents in my closet!”


Once again my father saved the day with just a few words putting Christmas morning back into motion!
