  • More September Dolphin Action Off Miami/Miami Beach, FL

This weekend I fished both Saturday and Sunday with dolphin (mahi-mahi) being the target species for both trips.

On Saturday, it was a two boat trip for a group of eight anglers. We found a weed line 18.8 miles SE of Haulover Inlet. During the entire trip, we worked south down the weed line and never found the end of it. Everyone on board both boats got in on the action and caught plenty of fish for their fish fry later that day. We did run back in and spend some time fishing on the reef before the afternoon rains had us running in. The reef produced several bonito, an AJ, and a couple of baits chopped in half or slashed.

On Sunday, I had the Araujo Family out for another dolphin fishing trip. The SW wind from Saturday pushed the weed lines out even further. This time we ran 25.4 miles out from Haulover Inlet before we found large patches and scattered lines that once again we never found the end of. We started with trolling small lures and caught several dolphin and a lot of bar jacks. Just as we were about to call it a half day, we spotted two frigate birds beating the water. We ran to the area, put out a live bait, and immediately hooked up to a dolphin. Another live bait and another dolphin. At that point Giego asked to extend the trip. We worked one big patch and caught a couple fish with each pass. We moved to another large patch and did the same thing. And finally a third big patch produced the last fish before we headed in. Total fish caught were 20 dolphin of which 16 were keepers. Another fish fry was on the menu for that evening.

The dolphin action in September has been very consistent. You just have to be willing to make some long runs offshore. Once you find the weed and birds, you then have to work the area and keep searching to find the fish.

I have plenty of dates open, so give me a call or email me to schedule your fishing trip.
