When will the shiner bite start for smallmouth? Only been once and plan on taking a first timer this year. Any help on rigging would be nice. Is the whole lake good for this?

they are probably hitting shiners now. i like to throw shiners with no weight and just let them swim, you get some great blowups when the shiner swims to the surface. i do better closer to the dam but have caught fish around somerset also. have fun and catch bunches .
Free lining is awesome.....we usually put a small splitshot about a foot up the line. I've got a 6+ brownie swimming down there I lost at the boat a couple years ago. Hoping to get some pics with her this year.
I read an article in KY Afield magazine several years ago about fishing for smallmouth in the fall and winter. There was one particular quote about using live bait that stuck in my mind and I have found it to be true...
"If it is tobacco cutting time use crayfish, If it tobacco stripping time use shiners"
