I have an opportunity to buy a boat from a friend in Virginia at bargain basement pricing. Only question is with titling in KY, it has an 88 Evinrude on it, and the boat is only rated for a 75 HP motor, does that make any difference?

Insurance will be the big problem I think.
Another thing to consider. Even if you can somehow get the paperwork "legal", heaven forbid someone ever gets hurt in some type of accident you may be held criminally and civilly libel.

Yep.

May be best just to pass. Thanks for the heads up on that stuff, didn't think about the whole legality of it. I was thinking of buying, and then re-selling, but may just be more headaches than a little bit.

I bought a new 17' Glassport bass boat back in 1993, and bought a used 140 hp Evinrude from a neighbor, riged it up myself. used it for 8 years and sold it for 700.00 less than what I had invested in it. never had a problem getting Insurance on it, and never had a problem getting stickers for it. worked great for me.

Depends on what it is rated for..........
a 140 rude is only 5hp over the 135 max hp for that boat. I suspect there is some formula or something. I don't know.
Also, 1993 was two decades ago, and I suspect people may have been a little less sue happy back then.
Later,
Geo

I agree, plus all that really means is he didn't have any complications as a result, it doesn't mean the next person wouldn't find himself in hot water taking the same chance. With anything like this odds are nothing would come of it, but that doesn't mean the risk isn't there or very real.
Try calling the County Court Clerks Office of the county where you live and explaining the situation to them. If they do not know the answer, they may be able to direct you to someone in Frankfort that can provide you an answer. Remember they are busy and they may not deal with questions like yours everyday: therefore be patient with them. Good Luck.
