Art history majors!
This is thought provoking, nobahma sort of down played art history as a valuable persuit.. I'm both for and against national aid to the arts. Buit what is art? Some of it is just plain crap. Like that pisaaole statue in Chicago. Now hold on to your hats. Google devils butt song. Now that's studying art to the nth degree.

Didn't look up the topic you mentioned but....I don't know diddly about art and don't care alot about it. I suppose not going to college may have kept me away from any courses or from coming in contact with it??
Years ago we had people painting these big horse statues around lex and I guess they were bid on and business display them. Some of those looked nice and others were odd. I guess other cities painted pigs or cows for the same reason. Of course I didn't care either way.:) It just isn't in my DNA:p

Some of the most expensive "art" I have seen looks just as well turned upside down as it does right side up. I do make one exception, however. Remember those public restrooms where the best artists worked on their art while the waited for nature to make a move? There were some funny poets who occupied that throne as well; I still remember some of those poems from my teenage years. lol

Is it art???
I guess I'm a cretin, I look at paintings like "American gothic" Night hawks. or the scream, are pictures. The Mona Lisa is another picture. A painting of a soup can isn't worth more than a buck to me. I have looked at Picasso paintings, and its plain " junk" to me. I don't think further education would change my opinion. Maybe I'm stupid, but I know what I like.

box cars and buses
Some really talented folks have done some nice work on those venues, but alas they call it a crime. Some crimes that are hung in meuseums belong in s--t houses.

My wife is an artist. I have lived with her for 40 years now, and what she can do with a pencil, ink, oils, water colors and pastels is amazing. I thought once I wanted to paint myself. I couldn't even get past how to mix colors. She didn't go to college to study art. She is self-thought and continues to study to get better at what she does. There are some types of art I can't wrap my mine around for it makes no sense to me either in quality or in thought. When an art piece speaks to you, then something about that piece is special, maybe not to others but to you. How does it do that? It may be how the artist brushes or places the medium on the canvas. It could be the scene painted or drawn that catches the eye. It may be the colors that pulls you in, or the message that melts the heart or sters the mind. Most likely it is all of these things that makes a great piece of art. I think there are multilevels or art, some very poor, some extremely well done, true master pieces if you will. Some of the great works of art in the world is beyond my grasp as to how they did them. As you may know, how the great old artists mixed their medium died with them. Art is the expression or application of human creative skills and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting, or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty and emotional enjoument. However, some art pieces are coveted and/or collected not because it is good, but who producted it. And some art is produced and reproduced for profit only. I have to say, my home, my life has be blessed by beautiful and thought provoking art nearly 40 years now. I am a very lucky guy.
