OK so I got caught on the lake a couple days ago in some bad weather. Thinking about installing a radio with a weather band. Anyone have experience and recommendations?

I've had an Icom for ten twelve years. If I remember I bought it because it seamed easier to use than some others.
If you have a smartphone (iPhone Android etc) you can down load weather apps to alert you. I use three different apps on my phone to keep up to date with weather. Being a middle school principal, I keep up with the weather for the safety of my students and staff during school and the sporting events after school. Of course I use it on the water too. So does my wife and three children. I was 13 when the super cell outbreak of 1974 hit KY 40 years ago. I use to give weather radios as wedding presents to family and friends. My wife still gives me that look when I buy one. We use the Midland radios at school and I have one at home, one in my 5th wheel and one in our severe weather shelter. You can program them for any county.

No smart phone, barely basic cell phone literate. My cell did go off last night when a severe storm came through. Thanks for the replies though.
What I carry with me in the boat is a small handheld weather radio made by Midland. It auto tunes wherever you are to the local NOAA reports. It also has an option to set it on alert so it only sounds when an alert is given. It really is pretty basic and not very expensive at all but perfect for what I wanted. It is small enough so I can keep it in a waterproof container along with a few other things I carry. It also has a belt clip on it if you wanted to wear it. I have taken it with me when hiking or camping as well.
