Used to be you needed a paddle on your boat. Bought a new boat and dealer says if you have a trolling motor you do not need a paddle. I looked at the KY boating regs and could not find anything. Do you need a paddle for required equipment?

It has been a few years since I have been checked but was asked to show them a paddle, was in my Ranger with trolling motor in plane view. This was at green.
I just downloaded the ky regs and did a word search and paddle only came up once and it didn't apply to your question. Paddlefish came up a bunch. I have never had one.
The Federal - coast guard may have a regulation that boats under 16' are required to have a paddle maybe on federal waters. What the federal waters are I don't know.
Thanks guys. I am in the same boat.
I have been asked in the past to produce a paddle, but it was on a smaller boat. I saw nothing in the KY Boating reg. and the Coast Guard refers to your state regs for boats. My Ranger boat dealer says I do not need one. Thus I was unsure how to proceed.
Just thought someone knew for sure one way or another. Guess I will call the local Game Warden.
Although it's a good idea to have one on board, it is not required by law to have a paddle on your boat in Kentucky. We keep one on our patrol boats and have had to use them before when the engine broke down. I believe it is a requirement in Ohio to have an oar on board and there is a joint jurisdiction on the Ohio River...meaning Ohio DNR officers will ask to see one if you are stopped while boating on the Ohio River.
Throw it in the rod locker or under a bench seat or along the gunnel in a holder. It takes up a little room but may be worth its weight in gold when you need it.
I have two on board for "insurance". One is a small wooden paddle and the other is a plastic collapsible.
We always have one on our boat. It comes in handy as a push pole once in awhile.
Always carry a paddle, handy for snake removal, hard to pickup a snake with a fishing pole, handy for other varmits too without punching holes
