Which lakes are you wanting to fish? I am finding the cold water bass in 18ft of water near a drop off or a hole surrounded by shallow water. Hooked a nice one yesterday but it was not hooked well and when it came up to the surface and tied to swim away from the boat it pulled the single hook loose. I would have returned it to the water but I was hoping to measure it first. I actually fish for crappie not bass but thought it would be helpful to let you know how deep the bass are these days. I hooked, caught and measured a 13" bass just a few days ago. That bass was also near the bottom in about 18 to 22ft of water not too far from the shoreline. Again it was a underwater slope near deeper water and still close to shallow water. This bass was caught on a single hook and chub minnow tightlinign with 6lb test stren mono. If you can get a small grub down that deep and drop shot you might catch some cold water bass in the depths. I am sure you have other ways to catch them too. Just suggesting one way that worked for me this past week. There's many ways to skin a cat. LOL
Good luck and dress warm and keep the life vest on at all times. All it takes in one false step to trip on something and fall. You may hit your head on something. I went so far as to pack some extra cloths and towels in my truck. I also put one of them Propane Cat Heaters in the boat. It sits on top of a 20 lb propane tank. But it's taking up too much room in my boat and I may take it back out and just leave it in the truck in case of an emergency. It's not that cold these days. But it's going to get colder sooner or later and I may need that heater to keep the hands warm.
I fish Patoka and Bluegrass. I don't fish tournaments. I fish mostly for crappie because that's what's in the lakes if fish these days. But I still have all my bass fishing equipment.
Starting in Jan I believe that the IDNR may allow gas motors on BlueGrass F&W pits. If so I plan on using my small gas motor to troll the depths of these big pits looking for suspended fish.
Sure wish I could have hauled that one bass in the other day. LOL We always want that moment back. I had the drag set too tight for that fish and before I could losen the drag he pulled too hard and pulled the hook out. Must not have been hooked very deep. He sure thumped that minnow though. Felt like a big catfish. The bass don't jump much this time of the year. But they sure do pull hard and long compared to the crappie.
I live in Indianapolis but would gladly meet you at the lake. I would definitely like to do some winter bass fishing. I have a boat as well. Give me a call and we can talk about how to make this happen.
