LOOKING TO BUY A TROLLING MOTOR , WHICH IS BETTER? EXPLAIN......:-)
I have not owned or used any of the newer Motorguides, so I can't say. But about 4 seasons ago I bought a Minn-kota 74 Maxxum and it has been the best Trolling motor have ever owned. "Knock on wood" I have not had the first problem with the motor in 4 seasons. I have taken into shallow mud, banged it against stumps, rocks, etc. and it is still kicking.
I had Motorguide on a new boat in 1999 and it was in the shop 3 times in 3 years. I did not like it at all. LIke I said, I have not owned any new Motorguides----they may be better now.
But, If I was going out to buy a T-motor----it would be Minn-Kota for sure!
I've had both, and no problems with either one.
I did hear about a lot of problems with the motorguide, but if my memory serves me correctly, Motorguide was bought out by Mercury, and had massive quality improvements.
I have a theory, since there are really only these two major TM manufacturers, then I figure they must both do a good job, otherwise someone else would definately be in the market.
4 1/2 years ago when I bought my boat though, my dealer did advise against Motorguide. Apparently they had a computer board the kept going bad. I also had several friends who had the same problems. But, like I said, I have heard that it has been fixed.
I guess the main thing then to consider is which of the two will give you the most of what you want for the least amount of money.
BTW, to show that my dealer wasn't bad mouthing Motorguide just to sell the Minnkota, I wanted a Gensis MK, and they told me of some inherent problems with the design, and I did not buy one. I then heard of a lot of problems from the few I knew that had them.
Good luck,
Tight lines and God Bless

I've owned both and to my experience the Minn Kota is better. The motorguide was quite a bit louder than my Minn Kota and I like the flexible shaft with the Minn Kota. A friend of mine has a Motoguide and he bent the shaft on his. I would go with the Minn Kota.
I have owned 3 motorguides and they all have done ok. The one I have now is a 82lb tournament edition, had problems with it cutting out on me, they said I could get the digital upgrade for 400.00 but lucky for me it stopped acting up and has been working fine.If I ever have to buy a new one it will be minn kota. A friend of mine just bought a new boat and he had them to put a minn kota on it and he really likes it and it is alot quiter than the motorguides.
i have broke all of them omc too.
i am looking for a used any brand if you have an old one. 502-773-2007
