question about salmon and dogs

My mom is a big salmon fan (she grew up in Oregon and Washington state) and bought some off the internet to try out for dinner one night. We had a hard time finishing this meal because it was soooo salty. Anyway, I was gonna feed the left-over fish to my dog when she told me that I should not do that because it would cause the dog to have fits and could seriously put my beloved hound in dire straits. My dad said that that was only true for raw salmon, cooked was o.k. for dogs to eat.

Has anyone ever heard of this or had any experience with it? Are there any other fresh water species that our pets might have problems with, raw or cooked?

I was curious once i read your post and looked it up in our pet health book. This book states that studies indicate dogs with high blood pressure can benefit from Omega-3 fatty acids that are found in certain fish especially salmon. They say you can feed your pet salmon or tuna but it would be expensive. Of course this is qualified by saying to consult your vet first. Looks as if the mega dose of salt would be more harmful in the way of the "trots" and stomach discomfort.
