Jigs
I catch for fish on jigs that i make than any other jig i have bought before. Plus i get more color choices... caught more largemouth on a red head red and white skirts swimmin it last year than anything. Plus my bucktail jigs are hard to beat for smallmouth in the summer.. i started makin my own because i couldnt really find one that suited me. I advise everyone to make there own. it's fun. and after ahwile it costs less.. and its alot better to catch one on something you made..lol

How hard is it to make your own?

RE: Jigs
livingrubber.com and staminainc.com are good places to start. I've bought from both. They will usually send you skirt samples too if you want to see a color before you buy it.
Start by buying a skirt factory tool, skirt collars, skirt rattle collars, rattles and living rubber. If you don't want to invest in a lead pot for pouring your own, you can order plain or painted bass jigheads from Stamina (This is what I usually do but I'm sure a lead pot & accessories will save more $$$ in the long run). I've caught more fish than I can count using Stamina jigheads mathced up with my own skirt creations. I catch 95% of my jig fish on jigs I've created. I also agree that it's lots of fun to create baits.
I have used a vice and tied jigs as well. I'll tie up hair jigs, rubber jigs and sometimes use both hair & rubber together. It's also fun to take old spinnerbaits/buzzbaits, remove the old skirt and tie a new one. My biggest buzzbait fish last year came on a hand tied lure.
My best success last year came on a brown, black, copper scale jig. It caught a bunch for me in 2005. It's also pretty cool when you wear your partner out with a bait you made.

RE: Jigs
yea it does feel pretty darn good to catch one on a bait you made. It's not real hard, i pour my own and hand tie bucktails jigs. I catch alot of big smallmouth on mine at dale hollow. Will never buy another jig again!

RE: Jigs
do you have any info on how to get started. Where do you buy your material? Do you make silicone skirts also? I would love to start making some jigs. Do you put rattles on yours as well?

Ideas for jig colors
Found the below link to be pretty cool. You can buy all of these colors at www.livingrubber.com to create jigs just like these. That "monkey shine" jig looks pretty good to me. Add a little more black & brown to it and you've got one of my favorites.

Also, the new Backstroke Jig from Stamina looks nice. I'm going to have to pick up a few of those real soon. Here's the jig page from Stamina...
