Barren or Barkley for Crappie?
Planning on a trip this weekend with my dad, our first of the year together. Hit Barren just this Saturday and whiffed on crappie. Was looking at maybe making a trip over to Barkley, but if the fish aren't cooperating there it is closer for us to drive to Barren. I know Barren is way down at winter pool and most of the spots that I hit for crappie are high and dry.
So bottom line, is it worth the trip to Barkley or just head to Barren and fish smarter?

Kentucky Lake crappie are hitting real good. Check with some of the guides...but I've heard some solid reports.

Can't speak for Barren but I caught some nice crappie on south Barkley last Friday. The sun had warmed the bays up several degrees and the fish I caught were shallow (4 - 6') and nice sized. I was primarily fishing for bass but when they didn't cooperate I fished for crappie for not more than two hours and ended up with 17 up to 15 inches. Another thing to consider is water conditions. I haven't checked Barren but Barkley didn't come up with this rain.
Hope this helps and good luck this week end,

Crappie have been decent on Barren. I caught seven Monday before dinner and the storms hit. I am just like you, a lot of my spots on Barren are high and dry. The Barren lake area recieved a good hard shower Monday afternoon and night. You may run into some muddy water conditions on Barren in some places. Up in the creeks will probably clear up first. I have been catching mine on bluffs out of the wind. The crappie always seem to be close to baitfish and seagulls. The crappie I have been catching are decent fish 9-10 inchers but nothing compared to them Ky lake slabs.
