i have a 40 4stroke merc and i love it it is on a tracker proteam 175 i can go all day and hardly use any fuel i got it new back in 2001 and not had any problems out of it
hope this helps
I have a 2003 Mercury 90 hp(4 stroke).On my other boat I had a 1995 Mercury 90 hp(2 stroke).There is no comparison,The 4 stroke gets almost twice the milage,is quiet,doesn't smoke,and you don't have to keep buying 2 cycle oil.It will also last alot longer I'm told.
LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-06 AT 09:53PM (EST)[p]Tracker claims that the optimax gets better fuel economy(or at least is cheaper to operate) than a four stroke. Example: 90 hp 4 stroke saves $460 dollars per year over a carbed 2 stroke in gas and oil. 90 hp optimax with fuel injection save $792 dollars per year in fuel and oil over a standard 90 hp carbed 2 stroke. This is based on 100 hrs per year average and of course the oil changes in the 4 stroke add to the cost. This information is on page 61 of the 2006 fishing master catalog from bass pro shops tested on a tracker boat. In other words they say it cost much less to operate an Optimax than a 4 stroke. I may not have read it correctly so go to page 61 and check it out for your self. A four stroke should last longer though.
Appreciate the input guys!

Andrew. You may want to check and see who actually built the motor.
My 2000 9.9 4stroke Merc. kicker was built by Yamaha.
Since Brunswick bought Merc. I do'nt know the current policy.
Dave.
Thanks Dave! Will check into that. Another friend said he thought Suzuki was making the Merc now.
Andrew
I beleive that is correct about Suzuki in the low to mid H.P. ranges. Merc builds the big boy's not that there is any problem that I'm aware of with any of them.
Dave.
How do the prices compare on 4 strokes? Honda, Yamaha, and Mercury. Yamaha did make some of Mercury's 4 stroke power heads but I think Mercury has been building thier own for some time now. The Japanese motors are ranked higher in customer satisfaction, but I think price and the quality of the dealer would be my main consideration. I have never heard anything negative about Mercury 4 strokes.
