KY Lake Report 2-2-06

Battling high winds and showers, with eventual severe storms in the evening, I managed to catch several nice largemouth on a jerkbait. Water temp ranged from 58 - 62 in the places I fished. The fish I caught were right around the 58 or 59 degree mark. A fast retrieve did not work! Long pauses were vital to getting a strike. Most would follow the bait to about half-way back to the boat, and then would knock the fire out of the bait after I paused my retrieve. The key was having deep water near spawning flats in about the middle of the bays. Some fish were on the flat, while others were staged on the edge of the break.

Nice report Scott thanks...I hope you were not out in that early lightning yesterday morning.

Good report ! I fished all day Saturday north of Kenlake on the western side of Ky. Most of my fish came in 6-8 ft of water on a craw colored bandit crank bait (stop and go retrieve)I found similar water temps. I also caught a few around boat docks. Sunday fished a couple submerged brush piles and also had some good bites.

I avoided the lightning! I love fishing in the rain or when the weather is bad, I have some of my best bites during and immediately after such weather! But if lightning is anywhere close, I'm gone!

I tried a crawfish crank much of the day sunday with little success, it wasn't until I used the jerkbait that I got results. The fish were somewhat suspended over those breaks, its as if when I used a long pause in my retrieve that they would come up and hit it. I think the crankbait was a little too fast for their liking.
