don't know about the 6 horse but on my 48 I had to disconnect the shift rod. the nut was behind the starter on the left front side of my motor.
Good Luck
what happened was i cracked my skeg and didnt know it. I was sittng there at idle and went to shift it and saw all the gear oil in the water. so i cut the motor off and trolled the rest of the day got home and sealed the smallest crack and put new fluid in it just to make sure thats where the leak was went to pull the starter string and the motor is froze up!!! cant get it to move at all pulled the plugs and held my finger over the holes as i moved the top plate thing (dont know the name) and i could get about 1 inch of movement in both directions. anyone have some ideas to help out??
thanks

Try the above link, that board has been a big help to me!
its the shift rod holding you up. if i remember right when you drop the unit down that inch or so you should be able to see a connection on the rod with either an allen bolt or small bolt at that connection. loosen that and you should be free to drop the lower unit the rest of the way off. I hope that helps.
i was just looking at that lower unit and saw those screws and wondered thanks a bunch guys for all the help!!!
Now this is what this board is about,,, helping others.
ok so i got it off thanks to you guys! I know my way around car motors well but this has me stumped. The drive shaft (i think is the correct term) i should be able to turn that by hand right? as long as it has gear oil in it? when i put it back together i can shift it into reverse but not forward. Also the original problem was that i couldnt pull the started string before i took it apart? Anyone know what would cause that?
thanks again
when you say put it back together do you mean mounted the lower unit back to the motor? If so, you probably need to adjust the height of the shift rod. mine is done by turning the rod, but you will have to disconnect the linkage to do this.
On the shift make sure that the shift handle and lower unit are in the same position when you reconnect.Handle in foward, unit in foward, handle in neutral and unit in neutral. If the handle was in foward and unit in neutral then it doesn't pull the rod far enough to go in foward. No ideas on the cord as long as the motor will turn other than making sure starter gear and flywheel ingage right. Again hope this helps.
I deff wanna give a big thanks to those that helped!! I got it all apart today and still couldnt move the drive shaft so i started takin the lower unit apart. I got the skeg off and saw that the piece of the shifter had broken and was jammed in the gears. Took all the gears off and re fabed the piece that broke so i could get back on the water sat wile i waited for the part to come in. It broke a tooth on the dog bone also so i gotta replace that. After about 3 hours i got it all back together and filled with oil pulled the string and it moved just like it should so wish me luck this weekend. Thanks again for all the help everyone!!
