6 ft med action is what i use - GL3 - sensitive enough for the deep bite adn with enough guts to drive home the hook. a very good rod for catching jumbo gills and shellcrackers at dale if the smallies slow down also.
I use 7+ ft spinning rods with a good backbone and fast tip. The extra long rod comes in handy for extra casting distance. I have the 7'3" bronze back series by GLoomis that is great for jigs, grubs, lead heads. I also have a 7' allstar rod that is more of a parabolic bend (softer, less backbone) for crank baits. But in all truth most brand name spinning rods 6' or over will do the job in a medium action. Bass pro will even do the trick. make sure the blank in at least IM6. I catch alot of smallmouth and I really do recomend a longer rod with a lite tip. Often the smallmouth are on flats or long points in the spring and the extra lenth really helps when casting smaller lures. Just my opinion. Heck I caught plenty even with the old cheap rods that were just a graphite composite and a spinning reel with no bearings.
Bionic Blade, 6' 6" Medium action. Bought 2 of them in 2003 and love them. Caught many Smallies at Dale, Cumberland and Ky and never been disappointed. Paired with a Quantum TI-40 reel and never ever thought of "Upgrading" to the higher priced equipment for these work excellent.

Bionic Blades are great for the money..... I have had like five of them... Sometimes BPS has the buy one get one free deal... I am so rough on rods that i can't afford buying the highend rods....
