I have owned one for a little over a year and they are a neat little gadget. It does a good job of showing depth and bottom contour but as far as showing fish don't expect too much from it. Also it doesn't work well if the unit you cast out is being capsized or washed around a lot such as in current or windy conditions.
My dad an friend have one and they love it.

I use a Humminbird WideEye portable in the kayak, canoe, and jonboat. It'll give you a bigger, backlit screen to look at and you wont have to drill any holes in your boat. Runs on a couple of lantern batteries. I think you'd be happier with one of the portable units rather that the tiny little thing, it's really made for the shore fishermen. I've considered getting one for that purpose.
