Best Bargain Lodging

Ok guys, you know the story. I’m married with children so I stay broke, Just call me Al Bundy, but I have a boat and like to, no need to fish for my sanity. I need a place to stay for a night or two that will leave me enough cash for gas money and nabs. I'm old enough that I need running water (ok, a toilet), but other than that a roof and I’m good to go. Anybody have any good spots? I usually fish on Lake Cumberland or Green River. (Trying to learn Striper fishing on Cumberland and just trying Green River-not much luck yet)

My wife and the guys I work with will thank you....

The campgrounds at both locations are very nice and might fit you budget. As for hotels I'm not much help.

Try the Lucky Vista hotel in Campbellsville for fishing Green. The lady that runs the place is very nice, and she's got a small room for 30 something a nite. Not deluxe, but warm, dry, comfortable, small refrigerator, close to the lake, and outdoor plugs to charge batts. Tell her a guy from the KBF referred you.

It pains me to say something good about Green River Reservoir, but it's a good time right now for a shot at some high quality smallies on the bluff walls.

jamestown marina on lake cumberland has some really good prices on rooms they are $59 a night and you are 25 foot from the water and the slip rates are cheap. here is a link to the website

i love stayin out there this time of year cause no one is out there and the fishing is good all in that area.

Thanks for the tip, I take it from your remark that you don't care for Green River. I've only been twice and would have zeroed out both times if not for catching a few 10" Bass on minnows bounced just off the bottom. Granted I'm no KVD but I can usually catch something. I would love to get into some Smallies or Walleye down there.

Timberpoint on the road down to Jamestown marina used to have some good prices for there motel in the winter. It is about 2 miles before you get to the marina on the right.

Green has never been kind to me. There are some darn good bass in there though. On two different occassions I've had very very good fish take me to school during tournaments. I'm certainly no KVD either since I saw both fish, but didn't catch either.

You can catch bass consistently there on bluff walls by concentrating on keeping your finesse bait in contact with the rock as it falls. Use a tube jig, shakey head/4" worm, or texas rigged french fry. Bites will come from 2 to 22 ft or so with most being 12-18ft deep. Most bites will be non keeper spots. Interestingly enough it seems the bites deeper than 18 ft or so are always punk sized spots, and the occasional keeper will come in less than 12ft of water.

Last time I was there, I caught small fish and the rarely occasional 12-14" keeper for 3 1/2 straight days. By the afternoon of day 4, I was tired and badly discouraged. To add insult to injury, my tournament observer, Joey had caught several more keepers than me without even trying hard. I made a cast up against the bluff and the bait only sunk a couple feet before I felt a little tick. Rolling my eyes I reeled up the slack and did pretty weak hookset on what I was sure was a little squealer hanging up against the bluff. I didn't want to snatch the poor little critter out of the water after all.

The rod loaded up and the fish ran to my right. Calmly as possible I asked Joey to get the net. He'd felt bad because every time he fished a little he'd get a keeper while I caught punks, so he'd sat down and was checking NFL scores on his cell phone. He asked me if I needed the net, and as the fish turned back and headed back toward the wall I told him yes this was a good fish. I could feel a big tail pumping back and forth. He scrambled to get the net in his hand as a big brown fish surfaced at the wall and spit my bait out. This was a big smallmouth, over 4 and as much as 5 and 1/2. I was devastated. Absolutely crushed. Fished hard as I could the rest of the afternoon, but my heart just wasn't in it. I wound up with 3 keepers in 2 tournament days. Not exactly a sterling performance, but hell, that's fishing.

A buddy related a similar story of his losing fight with a big smallie, and some good ones were weighed in including one 5 and 1/3 lbs.

I've only been to GRL two times, but loved it. I caught several nice fish, including some very nice smallmouths, and I caught mine on a CR using baby brushhounds or lizards.

I wish it were closer. I'd love to fish it much more often.

Jamestown Court-1/2 mile from the square in jamestown (go figger) on 127 $30 a nite.Parking not that great but electric on each pole in front of rooms. Pinehurst lodge also in jamestown right at the square..not sure of road #. 48 bucks a nite better accomodations, large parking area. I also made a comment about old Bandits Resort on 92 towards ramp.I was given some bad info.Lots of renovations to resturant,great people,good food and was told they would work out price to compete w/local prices...this would be my preference.Id suggest room# 1.You can park your boat along side room w/o unhooking.

Lake Cumberland Country Cottages is located behind Lake Cumberland Country Store on US127. It is on your left as you head south on 127 and up the road a small bit from where you would turn into the state park. Easily get to the Dam ramp or Pumpkin Creek within a few minutes. Her name is Elizabeth that owns them, very nice woman. She has 3 cottages, 1 that has a bed and couch and the other 2 has 3 beds. Each has full efficiency kitchen with microwave and full size bath tub and bathroom (For the bigger fellas), pull your boat right up next to the front door to plug in the batteries. This is the only place I have ever stayed at Cumberland where I felt safe in leaving rods, reels, tackle boxes and everything in boat at night and never had a problem. The big cottages runs around $65 a night and around $50 for the small one. They are not paradise but are clean and secure for your boat and other belongings. Another good advantage is that the Store opens up at 5am but sometime they will let you in to get bait or whatever at 4am when they gets there. THey have a pretty good breakfast and make a mean pizza as well. They also sell the Best Shiners on the Lake in my opinion, fresh and lively. They even sell them in small and large size instead of get what you get. Tell Elizabeth that Elwood sent you.
