canoe registration question
About five years ago I purchased a 15 foot coleman canoe to paddle around in on small lakes and am now wanting to take it to some rivers, but without the hassle of using shuttles. I purchased a small trolling motor for it and realize I have to get it licensed because of using the trolling motor.
The canoe was bought used from an individual and I has never been licensed, has no papers and no VIN. What is the process to get it licensed? Has anyone else had to go through this? I went to the County Clerks office recently and they had me ill out a bunch of papers and mail them to Frankfort. When the papers were returned a couple of days ago,a note said that Frankfort didn't deal with issuing VIN's for boats. Now I am back to square one and don't want to sit at the County Clerks office only for them to tell me the wrong thing.

Cut and paste the following link.

This is the "E-Mail our Information Center" link on the KDFWR site and they are pretty good at answering quickly and fully.
O.K. I just called 800-858-1549, which is the 800 number for KDFWR and they said you have to call 502-564-3298 in order to get a VIN for your canoe.
RE: canoe registration question
I ran into about the same situation a couple years ago on a 2-man I had got from a buddie, who got from some old guys family when he passed. It had never been licensed. I found the serial number etched in the boat and took a piece of paper and laid it over the serial number and with a pencile made an impression of the number. I took it to the fayette county clerks office and they issued me a title and registration. Don't know if you can do that where you're at but thats what it took for me.
RE: canoe registration question
Hey Tim you should be able to contact Coleman and get a statement of origin if you have find the serial number.
