Arrive late afternoon and head for a creek. About 1/2 way back start looking for clay banks and try to graph balls of shad. Throw your jig till dark then try cranks that run 2-10 feet deep. Expect the fish to 20 foot or so off the banks. Hop around after dark in attempts to find the fish. I suspect them to be in somewhat of a transition mode. Water temp is 54.
Couple things I would add. Also throw the jig after dark. Some nights they want a crank, others a jig. Some nights they are right on the bank, other nights they are under the boat. If the latter, move off the bank some more. I try to position the boat a casts distance from the bank and go from there. They'll feed on and off most of the night.

With the days getting shorter, I might try casting after dark. When you throw a crank, jig. etc. are you referring to a sliver, redfin and a curlytail on a dollyfly jig? WOuld it be too early to cast at 6:00 in the evenings or do you wait until later? I never cast except for night fishing in the spring when the shad are along the banks. This time of the year, I usually bottom fish or pull boards in the creeks.
THanks for the information-David

Mostly subsurface. Sliver, Little Mac, and similar plugs. You want to cover the water column. Shallow runner, medium runner, and deep diver. If it looks like a shad, they'll probably eat it. Just check that the hooks/rings are good and strong. Dollfly (also called bucktail jig) with a trailer is also good.

I try to get down before dark and scout at least a few banks. Get an idea where the shad is hanging out. I'll start throwing a jig just before sundown and plugs after dark.

Yes, by cranks, it means refins, slivers etc. That in itself can play a big part in your success. Tight wiggle vs wide wobble, surface, sub-surface, deeprunner. What color, blue back, black back or red/white? Throw what you have confidence in, but don't be afraid to change- some nights they don't want you are tossing, so mix it up on them. Don't be afraid to experiment.
Just limited 2 days in a row at Cumberland.....fish are in the jumps in the morning and the afternoons as well so you don't need to fish at night. We use the Gizz 4 crankbait made by smack tackle. It looks and acts exactly like a shad. Biggest fish out of 8 was just over 20 lbs with the smallest one being around 14.

I hope you guys don't mind hearing about Stripers from Lake Cumberland.
Cumberlandguy (Mike), and his uncle fished the Gizz4 this weekend, and came up with great results.
Here's his post, and pics:
"Cumberlandguy said 12;09/06: I do use medium action rods with 12 lb test...same stuff I use on Cumberland. Just put the boat up for the night. 1st time I've had a chance to go fishing this month. My uncle went with me. Man it was cold LOL, but the fish are in the jumps and only about 10 minutes from my house. The Gizz strikes again on Cumberland!

"Cumberlandguy wrote 12/10/06: We were on the lake at daybreak this morning and got our limit at 11:30 a.m. Fish were everywhere, but were very hard to catch. Did get a couple of really nice ones this morning though. I must be fishing the right creek , the last pic includes the fish caught last night, we kept them on ice as we were too tired to clean fish. I am taking off the 15th and will be free until the 26th if you guys get back down this way

"Cumberlandguy wrote 12/10/06: The fish yesterday were caught on Gizz 4s. My uncle caught his on X raps today...he "borrowed" a Gizz yesterday LOL, but he wanted to use one of his X raps as they had never caught a fish. When the fish are in the jumps, we tend to forget about taking pictures. All you can think about is get them off the hook and make another cast! They were finicky today.....they wanted the baits reeled back to the boat as fast as you could turn the handle. Last fish came at 11:40 this morning and was caught on an umbrella rig. There were some huge fish blowing up on the shad, but they were always out of range. Seems to always happen.
