Re: Am I wasting my time Crappie fishing this weekend
The weather forecast is a bit of a cool down for the weekend. My understanding is that crappie start to look for cover closer to the bank as the water temp moves into the 50's. I think that the temp in some of the creeks are in the upper 40's. All considered if you try it this weekend I would try minnows as well as anything else I could pitch at them. If you strike out on the fish you can at least scout around for exposed cover that the fish will be moving into as the water warms.
Now onto catching crappie in cold water. My wife has an uncle who lives on the Barren river and he fishes year round for crappie and catches year round. I think it all comes down to is finding the right depth as you were asking about. The thing about crappie is that with the temp changes that we have this time of year (up and down) the fish are moving into the different depths with these changes.
All things considered I would not pass up a chance to get on the water.
Happy hunting or is that fishing?

Since right now it's only Thursday night I believe I'd have to wait and see what the weekend brings as far as weather is concerned...but I'll tell you what, if you could have gone today, say like earlier in the day before the heavy rains, I think you could have done pretty good.
As for me, I had to work today, but I could feel it in my bones that if I were fishin' instead of workin' I could have had a nice mess in the skillet by 4:00 p.m. Good luck and don't forget that new fishing license before you head out.

I had a couple of hours to kill today and caught several more crappie out of a farm pond. It takes a very slow retrieve but the were biting. Lakes may be a little colder so I'm not sure about that. Was going to Cumberland today but my friends are not having great luck. I'll save my gas money for a while.

Fishin's never a waist of time!! But I think you're right, the extreme weather change is going to make it tough. Good luck!
