boat wont start ?
its a 1995 johnson 130hp on a 1995 hydra sports z260.turn the key and you can here the horn beep and thats it no clicking sound from the solenoid or starter. i tested the power to the solenoid its good. i hooked up jumper cables to the starter and it turns over fine. i went ahead and replaced the solenoid and still nothin. so the only thing i can think of is somthing is wrong with the ignition switch what to do ?

Re: boat wont start ?
Sounds like it's in gear. My boat will make that clicking noise when I try to start it with it being in gear.

Re: boat wont start ?
I know this is stupid, but what about your kill switch?

Re: boat wont start ?
Check all fuses attatched to the ignition. If they are okay it could be the ignition itself. If you know which one is the hot wire, pull it and the ground wire off and touch them together and see if it hits. If nothing, then it's the ignition. Make sure you battery is hot and connections are good.(I'm sure you have done this.)

Re: boat wont start ?
I had a 75HP Johnson that did the same thing. I found that when I would try to start it, I had a ground wire that would get real hot and smoke would come off the wire. It was located around the fuel filter on motor, I dont think the wire had a coating on it. I cleaned it up where it attached to a head bolt, and not had the problem sence then. Hope this helps.

Re: boat wont start ?
Another thought. Should not be the ignition if you have power to the solnoid. Should not be kill switch, motor would turn but not fire. Cross the solenoid itself with a screwdriver to see if power will cross through it. Make sure that it is a 12v solenoid also. The only other thought I have would be to see if you have power at the solenoid in the start position. If you checked the solenoid in just the key on position, the current may break in the start position, which would put you back into the ignition failure problem. Hope this helps and puts you back on the water. And especially hope someone on the board helps you to a conclusion. Good Luck!!

Re: boat wont start ?
ok i think i figured it out. i pretty much have done all the things you guys mentioned. the kill switch will not prevent motor from turning over it just kills the motor. i used a screwdriver to jump the solenoid it started up so i checked continuity on the wire from ignition switch to solenoid and nothing so i traced that wire and it goes to the shifter wich is a mother to get to my hand bareley makes it back there i cant see it i can just feel it so i moved the wires that are conected to the shifter the best i could and now it starts up. so i guess its the wire that goes to the neutral safety switch but i cant get to it ????????

Re: boat wont start ?
Glad you found it. Now just find an extremely skinny friend and you're on your way.

Re: boat wont start ?
my 200 johnson does that every once in a great while i just put in neutral and shake the shifter lever and it wil start right up.
