Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I talked to a dealer that sells Motor Guide and MinnKota both. He swears by the Motor Guide. I have always heard MinnKota is better, but the Motor Guide is 30% cheaper for the same features. I am also considering going with a straight wireless system (the Motor Guide W75). Any and all help is appreciated. TIA.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I have the 81 Lb. thrust powerdrive with autopilot and wireless remote on my 22 ft pontoon. It works fine. I hardly use the foot pedal. I found that when the batteries get low the wireless remote contriol will go into a protective mode by shutting off and turning to the right. If I hook up the pedal I can use the motor with low battery. It's great for trolling and the autopilot works pretty good.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I have had minnkota and motorguide both. The minnkotas that I have had by far outlasted the motorguides. I currently have the 54lb thrust minnkota all terrain and have had it for over 7yrs. I have never had any problems with it. It by far has been the best trolling motor I have ever had and very durable. I fish minimum 2-3 times a week and it has lasted this long.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
You're getting into a Ford and Chevy question here man. Half are going to go one way and half are going to go the other way. Just look at the features that want and the price you can get them for and make your decision from there. How quiet they are has always been what made my mind up. I have an Evinrude on my boat and it's the most quiet one I have ever seen but they don't make them anymore. Both Minn Kota and Motorguide make great products so either way you won't go wrong.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I had a long shaft foot controlled 24 volt system 55lb thrust Minn Kota on my pontoon and it worked great. I had a Harris Flotebote 24' pontoon....
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I've owned Minn Kota and Motorguide. I don't think there's any comparison, Minn Kota is FAR better.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
By any chance, did you buy the trolling motor from the same folks that fixed your truck brakes?
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
Tom,
Do you dry your hair with the trolling motor on full tilt?
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
Yeah! That copilot comes in handy in the morning.
Re: Need recommendations for pontoon trolling motor
I have a 22 ft Bennington with a 24 volt 65 lb thrust MinnKota. It's similar to this:

I like it because it has a quick release and comes off in about 2 seconds, plus, it frees up a lot of space when your not fishing. I have the electric steer and haven't had any issues and I'm going on my 3rd year with it. I have not been disappointed with it's performance. That's my 2 Lincolns....
