Re: summer time smallmouth
If you fish laurel then enough said lol. I have been fishing that lake for the past few years and to consistantly get on fish is impossible. However if you do catch one 9 times out of 10 it is a keeper. Matter of fact I don't know when the last time we caught a throwback. Laurel is just to deep and to clear and is probably by far the toughest lake to pattern fish on. My opinion for the summertime smallmouth is to fish deep points, maybe 20 to 30 ft range and you will find some monster brownfish, just don't expect a lot of numbers. 1 or 2 good fish a night can be a good night for her. Also try fishing a little later, after midnight till dawn, that may help to produce a few more fish but we fish tourney's over there and the fishing is tough from 7 till midnight. I believe me and my partner are going to target the Big C for a little while. Fishing over there is red hot right now from what I hear.
How do you all pinpoint and catch smallmouth during the summer months. I fish Laurel alot, but mostly largemouth. I mainly fish at night. I have always caught good numbers and big largemouth, but never have patterned completly the smallmouth. I will catch a few here and there, but never consistently. The lake is mostly deep rocky banks. I have tried everything it seems like, but have not been able to catch consitstent numbers and big fish.
Just moved back to KY after a 2 year hiatus in Hoosierville. Planning on spending a lot of time at Laurel from now on since it is closer than Dale and can run down and fish one night then back. Happily trade some information after I get some on the Brownies for Greenies. Never been on the lake but if it is deep clear and rocky then my bet is 20-40 feet deep points, humps and ledges using 8lb test fishing small jigs with trailers. We will see for I am CONSIDERING my first night visit to the lake this Friday night. Already studied the map and have about 30 spots to try right off the bat looking for some cover on the structure. C Rig to find it then jig to fish it will be my initial pattern this time of the year. My initial guess is fish it like Dale Hollow minus the grass pattern. I am told there is VERY LITTLE grass in Laurel, which is a shame, for Grass and Bass go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Plan on posting when I do go.
Re: summer time smallmouth

DH
I heard a lot about the tourny, unfortunatly for me I work on the weekends and can get very little time off. A lot of folks excited about it though. I really like the format, really opens it up and anyone has a chance to win. If you can send me a PM on who won it.
Re: summer time smallmouth
Elwood,
I sent you a P.M.
Re: summer time smallmouth
A little over 7lbs won the tournament. I think there were only 40 boats that entered. I thought there would be a lot more. I didn't fish that one, but from a lot of the guys that did not many fish were caught. Most tournaments on the lake people are bringing huge smallmouth. Last week one tournament I fished it took over 14lbs to win and the guy had almost a 6lb smallmouth. I caught quite a few earlier in the year when walleye fishing and found a secret then on how to catch them, but with the water temps up that is long gone.
Re: summer time smallmouth
dc basser travis singleton won with 7.49 lbs & 5th place was 6.49lbs real close tour. there were 44 boats with 4,400$ inthe payout . i would call that a real successful tour. 24 7 this is a good weight for a two fish tour.
Re: summer time smallmouth
Two fish over 7lbs is a great weight for this type of tourney. I just thought there would be more boats with all of the advertising and talk about the tournament. This type of tournament is more interesting and evens the playing field alot more. I am probably fishing the one at the end of this month. I wanted to the last one, but had prior arrangements
Re: summer time smallmouth
that's a good weight for two fish dh. Hopefully I can get a day off and fish the next one. A lot of talk about the tourny. That is always a good thing. Good luck keeping it going and we willhopefully see you at the next one.
Re: summer time smallmouth
it is a good tour. concept that gives everybody a chance to win right down to last cast of the tour.& the no dead fish weighted in rule means you will have to take care of your fish, both of these tour. rules will have less impact on the fishery & insure better survival of the fish. we should have more boats at the next tour. as this last weekend was the 4th of july weekend. hope to see both of you there. john
