Skegpro or other ???
Have any of you installed or use skeg protectors? I chipped my skeg and broke a small chunk off and was considering installing the skegpro, it's stainless and looks really good. Looking at that chipped skeg is bugging me for some reason and I think those protectors look nice and would be functional in case I have another brain fart.

Re: Skegpro or other ???
I was told by a skeg repairman not to use those protectors. When you hit something it will break the skeg off that much higher and make repair very costly and difficult. But keep in mind, this guy repairs skegs for a living so maybe he doesn't want you to buy a protector.
Yeh, I know, I was a lot of help!!!!!!!!!

Hey Mark, don't sweat it, just go fishing. A chip out of the skeg hurts nothing, and folks can't see it if you keep it underwater all the time.

Re: Skegpro or other ???
I have bent my skeg twice and onemorecast just recently put a stainless skegguard on it. It looks good and the boat drives a whole lot better with a straight one compared to a bent one.
The skeggaurd that I have on, has screws that are made to break on hard impact to keep you from doing any damage to the lower unit and it comes with extra screws to keep with you just in case.
For someone with my track record, it is definately worth the money.

Re: Skegpro or other ???
I was told not to do it too. The explanation was that if you hit something the skeg is made to give and reduce further damage to the lower unit... Dan

Re: Skegpro or other ???
i have one on mine and it looks good and performs well,i have dug a few trenches with it and it hasn't broken.as for on your bullet i don't know what it would do to the real top end handling beacause it makes the skeg a little thicker and no gurantees it is straight so it may cause some bad handling on a light 75mph hull,my ol stratos sled still run 72 with no problems.if you have a machine shop around or someone who can weld aluminum just have them fill in the ding grind it down smooth and repaint.may need a little epoxy to fill in the spot.

I struck a rock at Barkley several years ago and it took a bite out of my skeg. It's about a half dollar chunk. I got several quotes to repair it and finally decided to try something. I went to Home Depot and got an epoxy mix repair kit. I cleaned in and around the 'bite' then applied the epoxy mix. Since it was soft I had to keep working it, else it would all drip off. Eventually it began to set up and I let it sit overnight. I came back with a Dremel and sanded it down. I gave it a quick shot of primer paint then some semi gloss black (It's a Merc). I waited one day then went fishing. That was two years ago and it's still black.
I figure if it comes out then I have to do it every once in a while, but two years now and it's rock solid, so that's not too bad... and real cheap.
