Solution to the HEAT!

I have a friend with a place in Alaska.
The temps in the AM are 50 and go up to mid 70's and low 80's on a bad day.
He is ON the Kenai River with 10 cabins. He has some room the 26th through the 1st of September. I can probably get you a plane ticket .. from priceline for around $700.00
Cost of 7 days is $795.00 for the week including 3 days of guided trips..
OR for $999 you can get 5 guided trips. Does not include transport from Anchorage to Soldotna, or groceries.. but the room is free.
Car rental is about $250 but if you go with others the cost can be split.

If you are interested let me know.. Trust me it will not cool down here and it will be 30 degrees cooler there.

Silver Salmon Run starts in a week.. and there are trout and greyling as well.. Halibut trip on the ocean is one of the trips too.. and you can send the fish home .. the guide will pack and ship for you too.

I am going up early to scout things out and will be there to get groceries etc for the group.. I have a Doctor friend who is going with his son.

Please have your guide friend in Alaska box up some of that weather and send it down here to me as a professional courtesy. I am melting here on the big lakes right now. Tell him I will return the courtesy and send him some warmer weather when he is snowed in up there.

Dave,
Your reply made me wonder what you do to combat the heat since your out there more than most of us. Do you wear long sleeves? A wide brimmed hat? Sunscreen would be a must for me but that really doesn't help me with being cooler. Any secrets on beating the heat that will help some of us weekend warriors?:)

I just got back from visiting a friend who lives in Ketchikan AK in June. The fishing was good the weather was great but the Scenery was AWESOME! If you get the chance go it is a trip of a life time. I called him last night and he was complaining about the weather, he said that he is melting up there with temps getting to 80 degrees. Must be nice being that our low today will be 80. Ryan.

Actually I wear light summer weight shorts and usually a white T-shirt...I always cover myself thoroughly with sunscreen before I leave the house and carry some in the boat in case I need to reapply. I wear a ball cap type hat but a wide brimmed straw one would probably be better but I hate fooling with them when I have to make a run. I drink plenty of water...and I mean plenty of it....going thru about half a case a day of bottled water right now. I normally keep a bandana handy to put in the cooler and then around my neck if I start feeling too hot. Being out there every day in the heat of summer I actually get somewhat used to it except on exceptionally hot days like the record heat we have had lately....but as hard as it is on me, I keep a close eye on my clients as many of them have jobs in air conditioned areas all day and are not used to the heat as much...I always try to get them to drink water and leave the soda pops alone.

I will say one thing..as much as I dislike the high heat indexes...I hate the cold more.

Dave probably the best he can do is box up some of the Halibut and Salmon he is catching and maybe trade for some Crab Legs and send you some.. Of course you could come to Alaska with me next week.. I am sure you could make some money guiding for Salmon, during the salmon run, it is fairly easy to catch fish, and you being a guide I am sure he could fill you in on the more pertinent techniques.. LOL.

I know you asked Dave, and I apologize for interupting, but thought I'd let you know of another option. I used to wear (they no longer make my size) Solumber Wear sun suits. They consisted of White vented long sleeved top and long pants that also were vented and I wore sun gloves. The clothing is covered with protection for UVA and UVB rays. I know I took a lot of ribbing for wearing these clothes, but I can tell you they really helped.

I had one of my customers and his son out fishing back in the late 90's, and the temp guage on my Trolling motor reported the temp on my deck as 115 degrees. By 11 o'clock they were both getting sick from the heat, and I was fine.

If you begin to feel the effects of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, you can fight the effects by soaking a towel in the ice water, then bending over and putting the towel over your head. This way you can breathe in cool air, and you cool off more quickly as your head is where you lose most of your body heat.

If you ever stop swetting, or get cold chills, take emergency action immeadiately to cool yourself off. These along with any type of dizziness is a first sign that you are about to get very sick. Take care of yourselves... ALL OF YOU!!!!

To whom it may concern:
I did not consider this an ad since I was offering to take folks up to Alaska when I go and do work for them while they are there for FREE.. PLUS, I thought it would add a bit of joviality to the board as it did since the temps are much cooler there.
Still this is an ad of sorts. Up to you guys if it stays. It was meant to put a smile on some faces and not as a commercial..Still that does not change the fact that it is an ad for my friend in Alaska who has in the past donated trips to the Lincoln Heritage Council of the BSA for charity purposes.

At first I thought of it as an ad, but then as you said Jim, I realized that it was more an offering of an opportunity than an ad. And Jim, you know I cut you [B][I][U]NO[/U][/I][/B] slack....LOL

Besides, the thread really has turned into some interesting questions as well as a great opportunity for a lot of people. If I had the money, I have to admit, I'd be calling you to get in on this trip myself. I think it would be a great adventure.
