Stupid Tubes???
Does anyone have any info on these??
I see Terry McWilliams finished 2nd at the Northern Divisional at Erie Last week and he credited a Stupid Tube rigging for his success. When I watched him at the BassMaster classic he had a 4th place finish using it. I also saw Mark Zona on Worlds greatest Fishing Show absolutely whack em using this technique, but no one actually showed how they are rigging it what makes it unique.
Anyone have any insight??

Re: Stupid Tubes???
I remember seeing that on the Classic coverage. I believe his fishing buddy coined the phrase "Stupid Tube" because thats what he called it when he wouldn't catch fish and Terry M. did. I can see if you don't want to try something and it keeps kicking your butt fishing then you would call it a name.:) Not sure how they rigged it.

Re: Stupid Tubes???
The rigging of the "stupid tube" is alot like how you would typically rig a worm for fishing. Instead of leaving the hook exposed like you typically do on a tube, you actually have the hook embedded into the tube making it more weedless and able to be pitched in heavy cover..
Here is a link with some pics that describes it..

Apparently, Stupid tube is a brand name. I did a search for the term on ESPN outdoors. I don't have a subscription to the insider, so I am not giving any premium information here. Below is a short paragraph from the article on Terry McWilliams:
""""McWilliams' ticket to catching these fast-water spotted bass was a Texas rigged Honey Creek Tackle Stupid Tube, which contained a 1/8- or 3/16-ounce jighead. Several of his strikes were triggered when he snagged a rock and then managed to free the tube.""""
Dstep, I hope this helps a little.
Danny
PS, I found the following passage on ESPN Outdoors also:
""""McWilliams qualified as the winner of the Northern Division berth during last month's Bassmaster Federation Nation championship on Neely Henry Lake. He did it with a simple setup he calls his "stupid tube," which is nothing more than a soft-plastic tube on a Bite Me jighead.""""
Good luck,
Danny

Re: Stupid Tubes???
The stupid tube is made by Honey Creek tackle its just the name of thier tube, also they're just using a jig head. I'm pretty sure Mark Zona has his own jig head he made with some company too. He was sight fishing smallies on beds, I say Terry was just dragging a tube up there around this time of the year.

Re: Stupid Tubes???
zona was fishing docks for coosa spots. he demonstrated the rigging method. you insert the hook point of the jig head first and thread it up thru to the head of the tube and then out. rotate the jig head 180 degrees and then texas rig thru the tail end. it casts like a bullet and he was skipping it very far under the docks.i have used it this summer with a denny brauer 4 1/2 inch flipping tube. i just toss it, let it fall and then twitch it. it darts and swims very nicely. caught several fish. no docks around me tho.

Thanks for the help!! I went to Honeycreektackle.com to order them and they gave me Terry McWilliams contact info. I went out fishing with him yesterday and all I can say is this is an awesome rig to be throwing. He rigs it differently than illustrated above (I can't do computer animation or I would put it on here). The tubes and jigheads from honey creek do come with a diagram. I am sure you can probably use any jighead and any tube and make it work, but what he is using and how he is using it he says is the best available way he has found. It is unbelievable how this presents in the water. Pick it up and it never falls the same way... Once it darts left... then maybe right.... then maybe straight down....
The best thing about them is they are cheap baits to use!! They may not be $15+ baits, but they catch fish!
You can reach Terry at www.fishindy.com

Re: Stupid Tubes???
WOW, how cool that you got to go out fishing with Terry and see first hand the rigging method.
I'd be very interested in your attempt to describe every movement you make as you rig the jig and tube. I like the sound of the different actions on the fall. I think I will need to book marke honey creek tackle right now!!
Thanks,
Danny

That is not how Terry rigs his "Stupid Tube". His method is much better. I will see if I can make a diagram with the computer somehow.
I went out fishing on my own last night to a couple locations I know fish are always at and to put what I hopefully learned from the day before into action.
The main thing I noticed was the dramatic increase in frequency of bites. I could throw to the same cover with a worm, a jig, and a stupid tube in random orders and the stupid tube won 4-1 at least. Granted I was where I know I can always catch fish, but the increased bite rate sold me!

Re: Stupid Tubes???
i think what helps me is that with the strike king flippin tubes, they are weighted at the tip. i also get the erratic darting every which way.
i would like to see terry's method tho.

Re: Stupid Tubes???
I fished with Terry way before the Classic. He taught me how to fish the tube. It is now one of my go-to baits, but not at the top of my list. IMHO, if you can catch them on finesse jig, you can catch them on tube and vise versa. Fish the stupid tube the same way.
