Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
First, thanks to EVERYONE for all of your help on another thread "Gramps opened his mouth . .. .". Unfortunately, we didn't get to make the trip, but I really do appreciate the information.
Now, this thread! I was in a recent discussion with a fella about bass fishing. He fishes frequently, I don't but I did a number of years ago. He insisted catching bass was all about location and not so much what lure was used. He said, especially on Kentucky Lake, if bass are hitting on a particular lure in one place they will hit on it everywhere.
I disagreed, to some extent and said catching bass had as much, if not more to do with the lure than it did location. But while location is definitely important it is the lure that puts them in the boat.
Guys, am I right or wrong? Go ahead let me have it if I'm wrong because I am really curious.

you'r both right, the right lure in a place without fish won't get bit.The wrong lure in a school probably will but lure choice can determine the size fish you catch from the school. In general if a lure works on one spot it will produce on others as long as it is the same general fishing, say from one ledge to another with big worms or jigs or one flat to another with a crankbait and maybe even the same jig. There are usually multiple patterns on the same water to get bit. Some days you'll be right some he will, that's why the same person don't win every tournament. j.m.o
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
Yeah the real estate saying of location, location, location holds true in my opinion for bass fishing as well. I know there is so much more to it but on the basic level i want a good location that holds fish or should hold fish based upon the season and conditions. If i feel i have found some fish then it's up to me to find the best lure or continue to switch up on lures to pull the most out of a spot or pattern. JMO

90% of the battle if finding them, once you get dialed into where they are, the rest is just details.
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
I think on some lakes, one that jumps out in my mind is Herrington Lake, timing is the biggest factor, you can throw any lure at the right time and get bit. Location in my opinion is the more important than lure but without the right timing then you wont catch squat..
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
Well both are important but you can fish the best lure in the world in an area where there are not any fish and you be given a lesson in frustration.
One the other hand if you fish an area where it's loaded with fish and throw a bait that smells of gasoline you may as well go back home too.
This is sort of like the chicken and egg question.
Both location and the lure used are very important.

The wrong bait in the right place is more important then the right bait in the wrong place. Al Linder
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
This is sooooo simple. You can throw a great bait into an area w/out any fish and you will obviously catch nothing. You can throw a poor lure choice into a feeding frenzy of bass, and catch a limit. Don't give their little pea size brains too much credit. Location, location, location.
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
I think most of the time the location dictates what lure you use (depth, cover ...). Buzzking said it right - finding them is 90% of it. Once you get dialed in, then you debate the lures. When it comes to lures like plastics, I think how you present them is just as important as size or color.

Ditto !!!!!
Re: Which is more important to catch Bass location or lure?
Buzzking and Dover already said it. If Kevin Van Dam fished where there were no fish guess how many he would catch? Find them or at least believe heavily that they are there and then set your plan of lure application. As usual a plan of match the hatch will work and then tweak colors and presentation.
