Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
Just wondered if anyone has experienced hybrids or sauger schooling up in the spillways below dams on the Kentucky, as has been reported about the Ohio below Mcalpine dam. I believe KDFW stocked hybrids in the Kentucky a couple years ago but I've not heard anything about them since.
Re: Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
My buddies and I have been fishing below Meldah Dam about once a week for the last several weeks. The sauger are in there pretty thick. We have been catching up to 100 every time we go. We have been keeping our limit of fish about 12 to 14+ inches.Limit is 10 sauger a person for KY. residents.
We have been catching them on anything from jigs to minnows to skipjack strips.
Good luck fishing , but you don't really need it they are biting that good
Re: Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
Thanks, just was wondering if similar action was happening below any of the dams on the Kentucky River.
Re: Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
I just started fishing the Kentucky a few weeks ago after I put my camper down the Oregon area for the Winter. All the hybrids I've gotten so far have been in the 10"-12" range so I figured they were from a previous stocking but I haven't pulled in any sauger. I'll be there most of the next nine days but I'm still learning this river myself so maybe we can help each other out. Let me know what works for you....
Re: Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
Most of the sauger have been coming from areas near the backside of the dams in a variety of methods, most seem to be accidental catches while targeting other species. The hybrids are there and have reached above average sizes, but that is not common at all. Late summer they began the jumps, I was able to get into a few all about 5" on topwater. My buddy caught a 15" on a fly just the other day. They are there but the results of the large stocking efforts are yet to reach their potential. I beleive the same with the sauger as most of those caught have been pretty small as well.
Re: Kentucky River hybrids/sauger?
About a week ago I put in at Boonesborough State Park. The white bass were chasing shad near the spillway and I was with my son so we fished it most of the day. Was catching a fish on almost every cast, mostly on small spinner baits. I decided to try deeper and switch to a deep diving crankbait fishing in about 12-15' of water. I caught about a dozen sauger 6"-8". There was a previous post with a link saying that they stocked Sauger up river in the spring. I believe this was what I was catching. Not sure if this helps, but they are there, just not sure on the size.
On another note. I have been fishing the mouth of the KY the last few weeks and have done really well Sauger fishing. They were hitting on jigs tipped with minnows in 15'-30' of water.

Thanks for the responses. Hope to get out this weekend and give it a try.
