Re: Motor running wierd???
I have never had one problem with my Yamaha until the last few trips out. It has been very hard to start, then when it does it runs rough for about 15 to 20 minutes or so or until I can open it up. After that it seems fine the rest of the day but still can act up a bit from time to time. This motor has always run like a scalded dog and never has acted this way. Plugs are two years old maybe that's the deal? Also my dang gas gauge just suddenly quit working, time for a new boat, LOL. Any ideas from you guys that know more than me, I'm far from an outboard mechanic, lol.
Wonder how many of us that would be? ( Any ideas from you guys that know more than me ) lol lol :D Check out them plugs buddy hagd

Yea it may be just that simple, thanks GW.
Re: Motor running wierd???
maybe it needs a tune up. Take a good look at the plugs when you pull them out. If they are black with carbon, the cylinder and pistong top are as well. Might try some Mercury Power Tune (per the directions).
Carb or Fuel Injection? What year?

Carb and it's a 2000 model. I run Ring Free in it to hold back on the carbon but I'm sure it's present.
Re: Motor running wierd???
Sea Foam. it can be bought at auto parts stores and alot of Wal Marts carry it now. It is a great fuel additive and can be used as a winterizer for EFI engines. this stuff works great to clean out all fuel systems and will clean the carb as you run your boat. just add to your gas and go.

Mhall,
Just wanted to put my experience out there...I had an older ProV 150 that was running great but at a recommendation from a friend I sprayed some Yamaha (break free?) cleaner into the carbs as a preventative maintenance thing. Well, a month later my engine blew up so be careful when spraying things into your carbs....
Re: Motor running wierd???
The choke may be out of adjustment. I would recommend new plugs as well.
We can do it for you if you don't want to do it yourself.

I'm also a big fan of Sea Foam. My boat was running rough earlier in the year, one treatment of that stuff and it cleared up, got it at NAPA.
Re: Motor running wierd???
Mark, ya think there's water in your gas?? I remember a thread a little while back about some bad gas. Just a guess, I'm not to familiar with them big ole engines.lol...Chuck

You never know Chuckster. I run almost all the bad out then filled it up and even put a can of octane boost in it, so we'll see I guess. Isn't it a dang shame we have to spend our life fortune on gasoline only to get watered down stuff. It's enough to make ya want to smack an Arab. Sorry if I offended anyone I'm not always the most politically correct guy you'll ever meet. I put some stabil in it too because my garage isn't heated, just ask my wife's cat, LOL.
Re: Motor running wierd???
Check your fuel pumps out, I will bet that you have one that is leaking back into the cylinder that it gets it pressure from. Been there and done that. They are known for that. New fuel pump runs around $30.00. Good luck
