I have been fishing St. Clair every year for the past 4 years; I usually go in June or July, However the smallmouth fishing that time of year is unreal. This lat trip myself and two other friends in 2 days caught over 100 smallies the smallest being about 3 pounds the largest was well over 5 lbs. mostly caught on tubes, i advise using watermelon Chompers brand tubes with a 1/4 ounce tube weight and just drag and bounce it off the grass and they can't resist. as far as where to stay I can't help you there i'm lucky enough to have a friend that lives in Detroit and I stay with him. and usually we only fish Anchor Bay.
Are you talking about Lk. St. Claire in Michigan?
I have fished Lake St. Clair many, many times in fact I believe a fiancé left me one time because I fished there too much. Any ways the fishing is excellent but is better at certain times of the year. The small mouth and large mouth is spectacular with smallies in the lake and large mouth in the river. However the small mouth has declined in the last two years and the walleye has increased dramatically. If you are going for small mouth dragging tubes while drifting works great but some days they will not work. If there is less wind Chompers Hulla Grubs (watermelon) works very well if you work them slow. Grass beds always hold smallies in the middle of the lake. Depth is everything time changes their depth 16',18' or 22' etc. If you find their depth you will be pulling them in the boat for sure. Canadian side is better but you have to have a Canadian license. The Whapoo indian reservation is absolute best but is only for 4 weeks and requires another license. Do you want to stay at a hotel or campground.
Normally speaking the best time to go is 3rd week in May but you can only fish the Michigan side. They are hot in heavy at that time but it is all catch and release (I hope you are anyway) the Canadian side does not open until 3rd week in June I believe it is and the Indian reservation opens the same day. P.S. when you are up there find me a house for sale on the river I want to buy one up there.
