I have a 35 hp evinrude. It is leaking oil around the prop area. I think it happened after a rope was caught in the prop. How is the best way to determine what is going on?

This happened to me a few years back. Mine was a 25 hp. Evenrude. If I remember corectly it was no big deal to repair. There was a rubber "O" Ring that I think fishing line had cut into. I think there was also a rope seal and the "O" Ring . Total cost for parts were under $10.00 and took very little time to replace.

It could also be unburned two-stroke oil. If you have done extended idling, oil will build up in the exhaust tube and leak out around prop. This happened to me on a 30 Johnson. Check and make sure you are losing lower unit oil or getting water in it before you do unnecessary repairs.

Check your gearcase to see if the oil is milky. If it is you need to pressure test to see which seal is out. If you're in the Jtown area I have one you can borrow.
