Elkhorn Old School This Weekend
For old times' sake heading to Elkhorn North Fork this weekend to camp with my brothers and our kids. Takes us all back to when we went with Dad back in the day.
On the agenda: catch bluegill for limb lines, set lines, fish the long, deep pool we're camping on, run the lines every couple hours all night. If a big cat or gar takes one of those gills come back to camp and make sure one of the kids gets to go get it off the line.
Nothing like seeing a big tree branch swooshing up and down as you approach it by flashlight.
Good times!

Sounds like you'll have a lot of fun. But how in the world are you going to deal with the 99 degree heat? I know swim a lot in the deepest hole of water, those mosquitoes have got to be killer at night on the banks of the Elkhorn, aren't they... I found a great wrist band sold by BPS that works great in like a 15 foot circle. Cost about 5 bucks apiece, but you can re-use them for like 120 hours or so...
Good Luck, I'll try and hit my wading holes today or tomorrow myself...:)

Sounds like big fun. We do the same thing at the river every few weeks. We caught 8 flatheads about 15 lbs each or so over Memorial weekend. We would have caught more but some a$$ found and cut about half our lines. Hope he enjoyed the fish he got off of them. Seeing a 10 year old playing tug of war with a 10 pounder is great.

I've made a couple fans out of willow branches and I'm telling my kids it's either fan dad or walk home :D

I hear ya, fan dad....got to love your thinking.....:D

Well the heat wasn't that bad. Caught 1 small cat and 2 good sized turtles on the lines. A zillion bluegill from a drainage culvert.
Highlight of the weekend was my 13-year old daughter catching a 2-foot across snapping turtle she came across at the bluegill hole. She didn't know it was a snapper until she put it back down :o)
Re: Elkhorn Old School This Weekend
I'm glad she didn't find out the bad way that it was a snapping turtle.. Yikes. Man that sounds fun :)

Glad y'all had a good time, John. Sharing the outdoors with the kids is awesome. I took my oldest camping at Cave Run this past Friday night. We had a blast!
