I bought a .243 Rem 700 BDL as my first "deer rifle" and have used it most years out at the head of North Fork ever since. However, I was 16 and a full size rifle was not an issue.
If he is actually big enough to hold it to shoot offhand, I would get him a full size bolt action rifle. If he just isn't big enough, I would get him an Encore/Contender in .243 (or something with about that recoil). At least with an Encore, he could get other barrels and different sized stocks in the future. I also would get him something with a synthetic stock or a used rifle. I know I put too many knicks and dings on the Browning .22 I got brand new when I was 8.
What the hell does this have to do with fishing?

Go with the 243 you will be glad you did and yes the gun will be with your son or daughter a lifetime.

Well sounds like someone's got some issues. I figured I would asked the question here since most of the guys that respond to most questions are hunters as well. And as you can see this forum is visited and has the best responce of all others combined. If it bothered you that much then you didn't have to open and read it.
Maybe I should asked the question another way, My son has a used zebco 33 that I am looking to upgrade and trade even for a deer rifle to my neighbor, what gun should I go with the H and R or Remington. Now he really loves this 33 and has caught hundreds of fish with it but I am in need of some adivce on which gun would be better for him.
Thanks Road Toad for setting me straight
Yep the .243 would be my choice as well. :) It packs a punch but he will grow into it and of course out of it!
I purchased my son a Rossi Triple Threat. It is a single shot with three interchangeable barrels a .243, a .22 and a .410. Good price, excellent youth firearm.
I would go with the .243 if he/she is big enough to handle the rifle. More than likely they can grow into it a little. By the way I was not offended. Ryan

How accurate is the .243 on this I bought him the .22 .410 in the Rossi should have got the .243 but wasnt thinking at the time I guess.
Bigb ,both those rifles will last a lifetime and im sure you will make the right decision.I would like to give you something else to think about though.
I wouldnt buy a 9 yr old a expensive new rifle.I would buy myself a new bolt action 7mm/08 or .308.Both these cals are fairley lite kickers and are excellent deer medicine ,esp the 7/08.You can loan him the rifle every year but it will still belong to you.Tell him you will buy him a new rifle for his hs graduation.By then he will be 18 and have a idea what calibers and actions he likes.
This May I presented my son w a brand new Tikka stainless synthetic .308 bolt action w all the trimmings at his graduation party. He was nearly bought to tears. For the last ten years he had used my 7mm/08 mod 700 mtn version .i think he was more diligent in its care knowing it was my gun.
Like i said, just giving you another option that worked for me.BTW,Thanks for introducing him to the shooting sports. You are doing him a huge favor.DB
When my son started hunting ( about 9 years old ) I bought him the H&R youth model chambered in .308. He loved shooting that rifle because there was not much recoil and he harvested several deer with it up until last year when he began using his Remington .300 Win Mag. (He's 15 now).
*On a side note * This may be a fishing board but if any question involves getting a youth involved in the outdoors (Whether it be fishing or hunting), it should not be questioned with a snide comment. The youth are the future of the outdoor activities that we all cherish and we as sportsmen should fully support that. JMTCW........
