Man what a mess!! We fished day one of a two day tourny today on Guist Creek Lake and we must have hooked old broken off line 20 times!:mad: It really seems like this lake is worse than any I have seen before when it comes to old fishing line. The laydowns are full of it and the banks by any foot access is aweful. Wonder how long it takes to breakdown? Does mono breakdown?
i know what you mean was there a few weeks aco and hooked some line a few times was really bad around the bridge going up into the creek part i'm like you hope it breaks down i don't know how long it will last under water
DJD we must have caught 200 yards of line too. Pulled 50 to 60 yards out of the trolling motor.
Sometimes i think id never loose a crankbait if people would quit breaking there lines off everytime they got hung, but yeah mono usually isnt biodegradable from what ive heard but it will weaken after its been there for a while so you atleast stand a chance of getting that line to break before yours does.
I caught some old line last year on GC and when I pulled it up there was a broken rod and a calcutta reel worth about $200. It looked brand new. Barely needed cleaning and now is my carolina rod reel. Didn't catch any fish that day, but I can't complain.
I hate to bring this one up, but i cant help myself.. was fishing earlier this summer and happened to get hung up in some line. Got it free but it was still pretty heavy, so i got it up to the surface and there was a hook attached to the line. and attached to the hook was a dead bass head. Lordy i had a nightmares about that one.

Monofilament line is not biodegradable -- if it's not exposed to the UV rays of the Sun, it can last for around 600yrs. Not sure how long it will retain its pound test breaking point, if left exposed to sunlight, but it's still not going to dissolve away in a few years ... even if it is.

You're right CrappiePappy...I don't like hearing about how long the line is going to be laying around. Sad but true I guess.
WOW!!! never new that mono would take that long. Makes you think next time you are hung up to go the extra mile and get your lure back or at least as much line as possible. I wonder about other types of lines.

Man I don't know about braid but as strong as it is one would think it will be around even longer.
If I see old line I always go after it. I found an owl all wrapped up in braid dead hanging in a tree. Ever since if I see it hanging in a tree or in the water I do all I can to get it and but it in the trash. Plus sometimes you find so nice lures... Dan
Line we see and feel. Lead and soft plastics we don't but they are just as bad or worse.
I have seen guys throw used plastics in the water:( These end up in fish at times and are not digestible.
I never throw a single thing in the water and pack out anything I catch during the day. If we will all take more trash away then we generate then maybe over time our water will be cleaner. I acknowledge that every now and again the line will break mid-cast or something like this and the loss of line and lure can't be helped.
I hate to say it, but we have many uneducated people who don't even know what Green means that fish. As a result- line, lead, milk jugs with catfish rigs on them, etc. pollute our waters. How many times have you seen a used empty worm box on the bank with some empty beer or coke cans? No wonder people don't want fishermen on private property.
