Re: Huminbird side finders
I have a 997 and its worth its weight in gold......I paid almost 2500 for the unit and the platinum navionics chip...
Re: Huminbird side finders
-the below was a post of mine a good while back, when the units work, they work well, but i have sent back several of these for various reasons, they finally got me an acceptable 997, but my 917 still has electrical problems... they tried putting new guts in it and finally sent me a new one, same old story.. to be honest, i am fed up with their malfunctions, but at the same time, when they work i wouldn't have it any other way... i have talked with two other people who have had the same problems, but there are plenty of people out there who haven't had one problem. i sure hope your luck is better than mine
"i purchased a 997 and a 917 back in the fall, the side scan unit produced unbelieveable detail and i was very impressed, with the interlink, i was able to chart with the 997 and get directions for trolling on the front mounted 917 but now both my 997 and my 917 have failed and are being sent back to hummin bird
both failed due to moisture, the 917's buttons were hard to push and the screen froze everytime i cranked the motor,(fresh battery, good connections, 2 fuses, and no voltage surge) just a bum unit
they are in the process of fixing these items and sending them back, i hope none have you have had the same problems"
Re: Huminbird side finders
I have a 797c2 @ the console and a 787 @ the bow networked with a interlink. I have had the 797c2 for a little over a year and a half and have found so much structor on the bottom in the middle of these lakes it has won me several tourny's. I would find someone who has one and take it out just trolling and looking at the bottom structor. Each person likes it setup different but you will get the jist of it.
Re: Huminbird side finders
Its worth it if you do alot of structure or offshore fishing. Its probably not quite as good as all the hype, the cover like trees and stuff are usually small on your screen, not like the pictures you see with the huge trees. But you will find that cover, and its awesome on grass lines, creek channels, humps, holes, and shad balls. I got the 797 and yes i think its worth it
Re: Huminbird side finders
I heard you only want the side imaging at the console because you have to be idling at a faster speed to get them to read correctly. I heard somewhere around 3 mph. Is that right? I heard if you mount one on the trolling motor, it will not read right.

You only want to mount one at the console. It will show you everything at idel speed. If you are on pad, the ping is not fast enough to read so the screen comes in scratchy. You can mount one at the trolling motor however, any time there is the slightest of movement in the motor direction you will be looking at the bottom from a different direction so it is not worth it.

yeah like rick said its best not to mount one on the trolling motor. You need to be moving in one direction to get a good reading, and 3mph sounds right. It really isnt a problem tho, you can freeze that screen and analize it, and mark what you saw on the screen with your gps and go over it with you depth finder to pinpoint it, so it works out good.

Re: Huminbird side finders
For those of you that own a HBird Side Scan, are you happy with the small screen (797) or do you wish you waited and saved up some money for the bigger screen?
