Mid lake bass question

i am mostly a shallow water angler,fishing within about 20'-30' of banks and was wondering how everyone fishes structure in middle of lakes. If i find fish in middle of lake ,how is best way to fish it. Do i need to back off it or try fishing it close and what is best baits to try. I have tried to learn to do this but with no luck.
