Info for sprig trip to KY (CRAPPIE)
Planing on taking a trip to KY lake this april for crappie. Usually I would plan on going the week of the 15th but with the winter we have had and the COLD water temps and weather that is ahead of use I just wondered if I would be better to go a week or two later? I guess it would be best to wait and plan the trip when time gets closer but I will need to rent a room for 3-4 days and a know that time of year the motels fill up and stay full . I am planning on staying in the KENLAKE area.
Also I was wondering about the ice storm that we all just experienced, has this put alot more cover into the lake for the fish to hid and spawn in? In past trrips down trere it seems most structure if any is under water and if you dont know where cover is you beter stay home! do you thinkk the storm will change this?
Re: Info for sprig trip to KY (CRAPPIE)
You'll be fine going that week. They always spawn is phases and the black crappie move up faster than the whites. The whites seem to spawn a little deeper because of the clearer water so it is good to find some of that deeper cover. Haven't been lately so don't know about new cover, but I don't see how there couldn't be new laydowns.
Re: Info for sprig trip to KY (CRAPPIE)
I was down there this past weekend, and there is plenty of trees now laying into the water from the ice storm. I fished the north end of the lake, so I can't say for sure about the area you will be in.

I would try and go in mid to late March - you have a much larger population of black crappie, and they spawn a whole lot sooner...plus you might get a cheaper room in March.

Here are some fishing reports:

Check the reports and they should give you some direction.
Here's the conditions page as well:

Looking at those water temps, the black crappie shouldn't be too far off from doing their thing...
Re: Info for sprig trip to KY (CRAPPIE)
I would go late March / early April, but no way would I go any later than mid April if crappie is what you are after. I find them much easier to catch this time of year.
