Gasper River in Warren county - anyone fish it or have any info?
Looking to try something different this spring and was thinking about trying the Gasper River in Warren county. I see on KDFW website that it is one of the better smallmouth streams in the state. I use to fish this stream off of Hwy 231 when I went to Western, but haven't been back in years. Does anyone have any experience with this stream or know of any other areas where you can walk in? Thank for your help.

Middlefork creek just over in the Simpson/Allen co line area, also the upper parts of Barren river in Monroe/Allen co's. Tramble creek in Allen co, Peter's creek/Skaggs Creek/ Falling Timber creeks in Barren co, there sre several good smallmouth streams in the south central Ky area.

I fished it almost every day when i was a student at WKU. I mainly fly fished, and caught some very nice smallies out of there, along with some big warmouth. My best was about 3lbs from the fly rod. I know of some good deep holes that always produce fish. PM me if you want some more specific info. We kayak down that river 2-3 times a year too.

Oh, the Gasper River! That stream has frustrated me for years! I've fished it a handful of times (I also read that KDFW smallmouth stream report), and have only been able to pull out maybe a handful of smallmouth, and I mean "small" mouth....biggest maybe 2 lbs. That place is full of kayakers and tubers during the summer thanks to WKU alumni, along with a lot of trash. Good looking stream though with some nice holes. It just never produced much so I gave up going. The few I did catch I caught on a texas rigged whooly hawg and an inline spinner. Good luck.

To have some really good success I recommend canoeing it. I'd also recommend Little Barren in the corner of Metcalf, Green, and Hart Countys. Its an EXCELLENT small mouth creek. Also Green River is excellent. I always catch good stringers above Mammoth Cave Park.
