The Abec 7 just has higher tolerances than the 5, the ID of the hole, the OD of the bearing and from what I've heard you can't tell the difference, I bought a bunch of the 7's and they are good but I probably wouldn't buy them again I would get the 5's and oil them with quantum Hot Sauce, or find some more rocket fuel oil. Now when I bought the last ones to replace in my Quantum PT I bought the ceramic and that dude flings further than any other reel I have and I have curado's, citica's and a couple Johnny Morris 10 bearing reels.
Best Value? Abec5's with good oil as mentioned above
I replaced with ceramic on my old Shimano Chronarch and use the Rocket fuel for lube....works great!
I also cleaned several of the other Shimano reels using Lighter fluid to soak them and then once they were dry I put rocket fuel on them and that alone gave me better distance. I guess the theory is that the lighter fluid takes all the grease and junk out of the bearings as it soaks so you can get a good clean surface to get the rocket applied to.

Hey.........
I gave you some wrong info in the other post with regards to bearings.
I called ABEX-7 bearings cheap..........actually they are the BETTER ones, as you pointed out.
ABEX-5 and some of the other bearings, and bushings that are used in these high end reels are JUNK.
AND with regards to rocket fuel.......I've had mixed results with it........I don't want anything "bonding" to my bearings.......WHAT happens when you "overlube it".
I prefer a thin reel oil, and have been using a synthetic key oil that I use on musical instruments. MUCH thinner than any of the reel junk on the market, and it works really good. Not only that, but it is MUCH CHEAPER.
One thing you have to realize with fisherman.......we'll buy EVERY gimic in the book........that is the way we are......
How many have helicopter lures, or banjo lures, or that lifelike lure that catches so much fish, it has been BANNED. etc, etc, etc.........
Sorry,
Geo
7 is better than 5. The big question is, do you really need them? I know you can get a bunch of upgrades for Abu baitcasters. Can be of use for some applications. For a lot of fishing, stock reels work just fine. The time for upgrades is when you are fishing areas where distance casting matters. For example, when surf fishing I often have to hit distances of over 80 yards to get where the fish are (though there are days they are right at your feet). Tricked out reels help with getting maximum distance for times when it is needed. Casting for bass on a lake, are those extra couple of feet going to matter?
