I have had my night crawlers bedded in peat moss for a week and I checked them a week later and alot of them are motion less at the surface with alot of the peat moss stuck to them. I touch them and they move, but they don't seem to move lively. I also keep some corn meal on the top of the moss for them to eat. I am just wondering if I'm doing something wrond and or advise for a better habitat. also I dampened the moss a little bit.
My grandpa would take empty butter containers, fill them with dirt, put the worms in with a damp paper towel and grass on top and they would live for months in the crisper drawer. You have to change the paper towel every now and again and put fresh grass in. I am not sure what they eat but it worked.
sglass is correct as I have seen that work. My grandpa dug a hole in the shade next to his garage, buried a styrofoam cooler and filled it with dirt from his garden. He would fill it with worms and put some wet shredded newspapers on top. Put the top on the cooler and put a decent sized rock on the lid to keep the animals out. This always worked. When he got older I would catch them for him and fill up this cooler which he could scoop out and have his worms ready.

I have been keeping about a dozen night crawlers in my refrigerator for about 5 weeks or so and I stumbled upon something that they seem to like. They didn't seem to be doing too well after 2 or three weeks so I added some wood chips to the container. I have a big pile of chips in my back yard where I cut up a bunch of limbs that came down during the ice storm back in Feb. Since I added the wood chips they seem to be fat and perky. The chips seem to disappear after a while too so maybe they are eating them. I didn't think that nightcrawlers could eat wood but whatever it is they seem to like it. Also, don't put too much water on them. Just a slight sprinkle now and then. You don't want them to dry out either. Your refrigerator will dry them out after a while. I really haven't had much luck keeping them in the past for any length of time so maybe I am on to something
Add a small amount of coffee grounds, they like them as well, just not to much or they will break easy...
