was thinking of putting one on my boat its a 88 ranger i have heard that putting one on an older boat is not a good thing to do i was not going to step out that much and i guess i only need a 6" i guess the father i step out the more pressure on the transom does any body got one on an older boat and will it help me out any thanks for any help
i dont think that it would hurt its as long as your transom is still strong with no stress cracks and it doesn't give.... best way to check is let your motor all the way down and stand on the lower unit and bounch up and down if it doens't give slap that jack plate on it...
I have a 391v 19' 3" I got new in 93,200hp merk, I put a 6" jack plate on it years ago made all the difference in the world, GO FOR IT
If you need bow lift, as most rangers do, It will help. I have a 10" on my 82 375v...

I agree, I have an '88, 390V, 19'6'', 200HP Johnson 4 blade with a 6" plate. I have had no problem. Of course it was on the boat when I bought it so I can't really compare before and after. I will tell you that you will probably find that you will not actually raise the motor all that much if any. Mostly just the 6" sit back will do the job. Since I am running a 4 blade prop it may not apply to you though. I have my motor a little lower than it would be if it was on the transom. The reason I have mine so low is to lower the rooster tail and get my RPMs down. I'm still turning about 6200 at WOT though. I may lower it more some day.

If you can afford it buy a hydraulic jack plate. Then you can tune the boat much easier and better. Also, you can raise and lower for water conditions. In rough water i lower my engine, calm water up it goes.
