Rockcastle River
Went down to the narrows of the Rockcastle River this past weekend, mostly to camp with the GF.
Anyhow, managed two spotted gar on the tanglemouth lure (my first). I was disapointed when they didn't fight really at all. It was like catching a stick or something and the two I caught were pretty big.
Highlight was the smallmouth bass that we got into. We caught several good sized smallies. Had the biggest one of my life break me off at a rock:(
Just to warn you though that is rough country. Current is too fast to boat (unless your an expert) and the rock will beat you up walking over them all day (and I am a young man)
Also saw at least a dozen copperheads and another dozen non-poisonous water snakes...!
Just thought I would tell you all.
Going to lake Beulah this weekend, any advice?

Re: Rockcastle River
I don't have any advice for your lake, but I do take a canoe/whitewater/fishing trip with some of my highschool buddies every other year on the Rockcastle. This year we went to Big South Fork (19 mile trip). We caught several 3lb+ smallmouth in the Rockcastle, but the holes they come out of aren't accessible by vehicle - canoe only. There are also some pretty tough rapids in the stretch we take our journey on.
We catch a lot of nice smallmouth, and hopefully the one that broke you off will be waiting for you the next time you go. That is some beautiful country down there, and you are right when it comes to the snakes:cool:. We'll be going next year, I believe.

Re: Rockcastle River
Never been to the Rockcastle River but, I have been to Big South Fork and that is always a blast, lots of snakes as well. All I needed to hear was smallies and you sold me. Sounds like a blast.
