2004 Evinrude 150 HO
I need help. This 150 which at speed runs great sometimes drives me crazy. When running from one spot to another and I come down off plane it will sometimes idle really rough. When it does that it is hard to start on the next move. When I come down and it is idleing smooth it will start right up and no problem. When it is hard to start and it finally does start I get a lot of blue/black smoke and it stinks something terrible. Has anyone else had this experience?????? Help me if you can......

Re: 2004 Evinrude 150 HO
There is a possibility that I may have gotten some XD30 because I buy it bulk from my dealer and the barrels are side by side. The kid that pumped it may have gotten the wrong barrel. Do you think that would make a difference????? thanks

Re: 2004 Evinrude 150 HO
My opinion is MAYBE LOL. I would drain the oil and try the other first. Then I would check your plugs or just replace them. If that doesnt work maybe try a hotter plug. If that doesnt work then do a compression test on the cylinders just to be safe.

Re: 2004 Evinrude 150 HO
you would know if you have XD30 or XD50. The XD30 is red, and the XD50 is blue/green if i remember right. But i do know there is a large color difference.

I have heard only an etec mechanic can determine what the problem is. I have also heard that the spark can get pretty gummed up. They are a very fickle motor.

Re: 2004 Evinrude 150 HO
Thanks for the help guys....I fished a 3 hr tournament this evening on the river. I filled it up with 89 octane gas instead of the 87 and added a dose of injector cleaner. It ran really well and I picked up about 400-500 rpm. I did have trouble starting it a couple of times. If anyone else has any ideas please feel free to jump in.....

Watch the higher octane fuel............might burn HOTTER........may damage your power head.

Maybe run some Seafoam in the fuel and also spray it through the carbs while running!
